  • Pirelli Scorpion A/T (not ATR...) and alternatives?

This is the only controlled shootout I have found of A/T or M/T for that matter tyres: http://4wdmonthly.com.au/reviews/tips/tyres.php
(also does anyone know if it's actually the Dick Cepek or Mickey T FC-II they are reviewing??)
On a side note if anyone knows of anymore please post a linky?

Now the main thing, the winner of that shootout was the Pirelli Scorpion A/T, seems like a pretty good allrounder...
The issue is that when I went around tyre shops looking to buy a set of these shoes they all seemed to think I must be mad thinking the ATRs are good offroad, then I realised that there's and extra R on there (Road?)
So, do these tyres even exist anymore? If so any ideas of where to find them in perth?
Alternatively if they are discontinued, what are peoples experiences with those Kumho Road Ventures, I can't find anything on here by searching...
Speaking of alternatives, just how bad are the BFG A/Ts on road, and how badly do they chip/cut offroad?
The main use is onroad but we want to get some decent offroad tyres as we want to get more into offroading... (currently haven't done anything serious, since we have always ended up going alone...)

That's good to hear seeing as the Pirelli's might well be discontinued and the Kumho's sound a bit not off roadey being called Road Ventures :P The cooper ST-C I'm scared of from all the things I've read of them breaking badly, also heard a lot of bad things about Mickey T's.. Good things too from both of them though... Just haven't heard anything bad about the BFG's ever, nothing crazy good like the Coopers and Mickey T's, but not a single bad thing...
Also, would you say M/T's would be absolute overkill for that? How much of a difference do they really make?

I have a set of Pirelli Scorpion ATR 265/70R17 - 10 ply side walls on my rig fitted Feb 2009. I have taken them to the Flinders Ranges / lots of beach runs / malee scrub etc - no real problems at all. Thing I most like is these are really quiet on the road and the handling is much better than the Dunlops. I always thought that the ATR stood for All Terrain Radial. Please note there are 2 side wall ply ratings for the same tyre and tread pattern - one 4 (or 6) and one 10. I know because I stipulated the 10 ply and they fitted the 4 ply - I took the tryes back the next day after checking and they all had to be replaced for the 10 ply. You can tell because of the Load Rating and Speed rating. Take home message if you go for these tyres make sure you get the 10 ply - check and check again before they are fitted! Saves hassles I can tell you!

I'm not too keen on the ATRs, they look like road tyres too...
Seems like BFG A/T's will be the go... Anyone know how much bigger rolling diameter you can go in WA? I cannot find it on the DPI (oh DOT now :roll website about tyre sizes, only really about wheel track and rims... Same with suspensions, only has info on lowering... Silly WA :P

10 ply walls, nice and quiet, I am happy with them.

Just about to purchase some of the Pirelli Scorpions, can you let me know what the Load and speed rating numbers are for the 10 ply. Cheers
