  • Aftermarket Wheel Q's

I'm hoping to try and get some decent aftermarket wheels to try and dress the prado up a bit - I see too many prados with the Factory alloys. The ROH and CSA alloys offered by most wheels shops doesn't do much for me either (read: boring)- the factory wheels are less boring!! Anyway I was hoping to run something and still fit a MT tyre (I don't have the room for swapping over two sets of rims). I've searched the internet high and low and attmpeted to speak to various tyre places and so far only Mickey Thompson offer a wheel (Torque) that 1. looks good and 2. confirms that it fits a 120 Prado However its an 18x8.5 +20 wheel which means approx 3mm less inwards space - the only tire sizes that seems to be offered for a 18 inch wheel in a MT is either a 305/60 R18 (most common), and a 275/70 R18. Does anyone have any idea if this will fit without fouling on suspension components? What size offsets (of wheels are available in Australia) that can people confirm that fit a 120 prado?

    I found this on a european Toyota forum - the rims are a 17x8.5 +5 with a 265/70R17 MT

Anyone have any idea how this will go offroad when flexing the suspension with regards to scrubbing?

Just an idea, but if it were me, I would seriously think about having your wheels painted in baked enamel, or powder-coated. It would be way cheaper, and you would be sure of legal and available tyre sizes, that will work well with your vehicle. Just a thought.

        Re: Aftermarket Wheel Q's

i've been looking for some decent wheels for the last 6 months.

i finally got the chance to test fit a 17"x9" mickey thompson sidebiter wheel. looks awesome witht he black on white. sorry, didn't get any pics.

the sidebiter didn't have a tyre on it though, i wanted a 285 on it, but had no stock.

the wheel is dead level with the outside of the flare, meaning the tyre will protrude out. (sidewall/side lugs)

inside clearance was about 1" or 20-30mm. heaps for a 285.

i was thinking that most of the MT wheels have the same specs as the procomps, and should all fit ok.

if you use your 120 off road, i would advise against these wheels. unless you go to a 18" or 20". the 17"x9" only had about 2-3mm clearance to the brake caliper. i can see mud and rocks smashing the rim to bits. this was the reason i went against these. i was able to get them for about $350 ea.

I take it you are aware of the Toyota Phoenix wheel that is available to suit the 120s?

These tyres are 275 65 17. The wheel nuts that come with these have the flange for alloys and a chamfer for steel wheels so I can use the spare off the trailer or the trailer wheels (these are steel GX wheels) in an emergency without carrying extra wheel nuts.

Reasonably priced (when I bought mine) and the same size as the factory wheels. Have only seen one other Prado fitted with these and that was today and he/she parked next to me!

            Hi,
            this is my Cruiser,
the tyres don't rub any where.
I was out last weekend with our 4x4 mates, and gave the 120 some really serious off roading.

            Here's our day out

              17 x 7.5 'PHOENIX' Accessory Alloy Wheel

Hi Guys - Could any one please tell me where these wheels fit into the Prado picture? In the Prado brochure I have there is one photo with a Prado wearing these wheels. They are a genuine Toyota part (PZQ80 60090) and it fits models GRJ120R and KZJ120R. I've ended up with three of them with a view to using a couple as spares for when we do the Anne Beadell and Canning in winter. Cheers, Trev
Last trip to the centre cost me three cars. One written off. One a #*#*NISSAN blew up. Bought a new Prado in Alice Springs to get home. Had a great trip. I must be mad.
2006 Auto Diesel Prado, Soverign bullbar, (now I can fit my UHF) Safari snorkel, Thin plastic Toyota wheel cover and a whole lot of junk to haul around. Running Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ 265/70R17 IPF Xtreme Long range phone aerial (with a bit of luck)

                Re: Aftermarket Wheel Q's

Trev the phoenix wheel are a locally made option wheel marketed by Toyota. When I bought my GX I was after 3 more steel wheels for my trailer and ended up getting 5 phoenix alloys for about the same price (this was before Toyota did the famous run out price on steelies), so now I have 4 spares! I ahve BFG A/Ts on the car with an unused GT as spare until I wear the BFGs enough to replace them. As far as I know you can still get these from Toyota for about $250 each. The phoenix wheels use a taper not flat wheel nut so you will need to make sure you have the correct wheel nuts but having said that the same nut can be used for the steel wheels and the phoenix wheels.

Hello Michael -Thanx for the info. You sent me into a panic for a while. I just checked the wheel studs and they appear the same as my original equipment mags on the GXL. There is the nut, a flat washer and spigot with a chamfer on the end. I want to carry two spares fore the Anne Bidell and CSR trip. Hope this clears things up. Cheers, Trev

I had looked at the side biter and was watching Joey's thread hoping he would make the leap first but it wasn't to be. The Brake Caliper clearence is a problem even on the stock wheels as I have already had debris stuff in my wheels around my brakes, so don't think I wouldn't be much worse off. I have been looking at the Pro Comps and the American Racing ranges also. Still trying to decide if i justify pretty alloys just to throw a muddy on and take bush.

Is anyone aware of what companies make a 17x8 or a 17x9 Steel "sunraysia" wheel that clears the front calipers? Most wheel shops i have talked to are quite clueless as to what will clear calipers on a modern 4wd, which is a bit frustrating. I have seen some fitted to Prados but they look like they have a large positive offset. Was kind of hoping to get a 17x9 with a 0 to +10 offsest or a 17x8 with a 0 offset. I'm just a bit concerned about using an expensive alloy as a a set of play rims.
