Re: looking for gxl alloys for my gx.

Thanks Samo, a bit of Googling around the forums (Even the Pajero one, dare I say that word) made it sound like they are hard to get, but I don't think they will be. Cheers

Just remember that factory GXL alloys do not take tapered nuts.

Re: looking for gxl alloys for my gx.

OK... I admit, I am a nube when it comes to understanding all this about the feet that are needed and or legal..

*** I've got a bog standard 2008 Turbo Diesel 3000 and want to put the wider tyres that the GX, GXL, VX and Grande run as I do on occasion get to run on teh beach and I under stand that mileage can be better than the standard tyres.

I'm currently running the Toyota standard 225/70R17 (steel rims) and they have done about 20K... So assuming about 10K left.

I was thinking of putting the wider after market alloys on AND my wife over herd; and went and bought some of e-bay

Great intentions... Maybe not the best outcome

**** I looked at the tyre info on the door piller:

Which states: Rim Size: 17X6J, Tyre Size: 225/70R17 108S Reinforced

              AND then lower down;

Which states: Rim Size: 17X71/2J 17X71/2JJ, Tyre Size: 265/65R17 112S Reinforced

***** The Alloy rims which I now have 4 off; are stated as being for the Prado and are 17 x 7.5 with an offset of 28

So after all that great detective work I am lost ops: ops: ops:

From many hrs of reading and searching... 50/50 chance the rim and some 245/xxR/17 may be OK with out flares

An even better chance that I will need flares ARB and TJM appear to offer flares at a $$$$ vale equal to the tyres and the new Rims; that is well in excess of $1k and after painting etc etc closer to $1.4K plus

Any one have and first hand experience with this very matter; such that they would like to enlighten one, now very confused Prado owner and who is trying to keep smiling, while not tossing the lot back at the wife :!:

PS. I am close to JAXQuickfit in Albion; so intend to drop in and have one of teh new Rims with me... But need to have some understanding; such that I do not get even further into strife.

I will be checking back later and in the morning...

              Thanks in Advance...

Re: looking for gxl alloys for my gx.

Mark rather than go to the trouble of having a tyre place fit up a wheel/tyre you are welcome to bolt on one of my spare GX steel wheels (you can take two away and play as long as they come back  ) or the spare Phoenix alloy off the back. Both are 17x7.5 with 265/65 17s on them (one new Grandtrek the other a worn Cooper ATR) and see how it looks. There are a few PPers who have run the standard alloys with 265s on the older model GX that didn't have flares and a couple who run 245/70s on the same wheels. The 265 tyre tread seems to sit inside the guards but the sidewall is exposed. Up to you if you want to take a chance but I suspect in Qld you wont have any trouble. As far as picking the right profile for the new tyres try a site like this:

                http://www.rimsntires.com/rt_specs.jsp

Where you can punch is standard tyre sizes and see what you need to do to get the correct rolling diameter. Bear in mind in Qld you can only go +14mm or -25mm on original diameter.

I run 275s and you are also welcome to throw one of those on but they will be way too wide.

                Michael

EDIT: A quick check of the tyre sizes shows that the placard allows for 225/70 17 which are 748mm diameter (-ish varies depending on brand and type of tyre but close enough for us) and 265/65 17 on a wider rim which are 776mm diameter. 245/70 17 are the same diameter as this at 776mm. Legally you would be able to go to 790mm so you could actually run a 225/75 17 on either rim and get a longer footprint which is at least as important in sand as width (but again depends on the tyre) and keep your tyres within the guards, if such an animal exists. You would also pick up about 12mm in ground clearance.

Your OFFER is very much appreciated.. AND if I can get away on the weekend I would like to take you up on at least tossing on two units and being able to visualise the outcome... My guess is 245/70 will be the outcome; being a bit more on the cautious side, but until one sees it... One never knows.

All I can offer you is fresh coffee ( Home roasted and blended), if your in my area

PS that tyre sizing page is great... Still double Dutch to me

The 28 offset doesn't sound right. The 120 series has an offset of +30. The 150 has an offset of +25. What do the alloys look like? The normal GXL alloys? Speedy Grandes? Or Toyota's Phoenix alloy (http://www.canberratoyota.com.au/defaul ... mSpecial=1)

Just trying to keep it under wraps....... And I need to get it sorted ASAP and get on with other work stuff that I have sort of put off

Thus at the Shop... 265 or 245 - It can be done on the spot...

However: I Was ALSO hoping to give my Daughter some driving lessons and drive out your way ...

She was pissed when I sold the old 1991 Dual Cab and not happy with this Prado as it is new.....

So the drive would have given her a few more hrs.. I think she has 70 up now.. But needs more.

I had visions of lots of hill starts out your way... I give her 10" of roll back - MAX ; After that it is a fail... I tried standing behind her once ( She looked and then put it into reverse   ), but now I just use a match box... SAFER ops:
