  • Cooper ATR - 265/65 R17 & 265/70 R17

OK... I have searched through the thread but cant really come across anything else to answer this question so I will post a new topic...

The Grandtreks on my 'new' prado are coming to the end of their life with probably another few thousand left in them so I am shopping around for some replacements. I emailed my local dealer that I usually go through and get pretty good service from and he has recomended:

"we use the Cooper Atr a lot in this size for your vehicle as they are a good combination between a very tough off-road tyre and a nice quiet smooth on-road tyre. They work out to be including the fitting and balancing to be $339 each. There is another option though if you are going for all 5, you can go up a size to 265/70R17 the benefit of this is that the tyres in what’s called light truck construction and are a 10 ply tyre. This is an advantage as you still get the quiet tread pattern but these are extremely tough off-road and will last about 50% longer mileage wise. These work out to be $399 each."
Has anyone used either of these tyres on their Prados and have any pro's or con's about them? I imagine I would need spacers for the larger spare but thats not an issue to fabricate. Just really looking for any feedback on either of these rubber boots. If I was going with the larger tyre for example thats 2k gone so I want to make the right decision

I would be going th the LT tyre in this brand, it has a deeper tread and better sidewall protection so should last longer. A friend had the standard construction and lasted all of 20K and were nearly bald after a long outback trip, besides staking one of them.

I havn't but a fella I know has had two sets and is very pleased with them. The first set got really chipped and cut up while having way too much fun but I believe he got about 85k or more out of them. The second set I believe are travelling fine. I'm not sure if he has the 265/65R17 or the 265/70R17 in LT. Another guy I have met indicated that the carcass of the ATR and ST and ST-C are the same so from a pucture resistance persective they are all pretty much on par execpt the difference between Passanger and LT tyre which typically has an extra ply in the side wall.

I had standard Cooper ATRs but have now switched to BFGs. The Cooper ATRs were excellent on the blacktop, nice and quiet with good grip, but the standard construction were left wanting on outback roads. I lost two tyres in two trips - one just out of Oodnadatta and one between Mt Dare and Dalhousie (yes I had lowered the pressure). Both tyres suffered severe damage on moderately rocky roads. The BFGs I now have are LT construction and I would recommend this if you intend to travel on outback roads.

Just remember 265/70 is illegal in some states and could affect your insurance.

Actually becoming legal in QLD as of 1st July 2011...
Not sure about other states adoption of the national standard (which states lifting the car/4wd at most 50mm is OK)

The 50mm includes tyres and lift?? I think so u need to be carefull about having both.

Yes - a combination of tyres and lift to be no greater than 50mm...

Of course whether QLD will actually ratify this on time is another matter!

                    Re: Cooper ATR - 265/65 R17 & 265/70 R17

I fitted 265/65 17 ATRs from new (Jan 2008) because there wasn't much available and I decided to give the Coopers a go. They were fine on the blacktop and sand. Pretty much useless when the trails became muddy/stoney. I took them off at 55,000 km (ish). Plenty of tread left but there were micro cracks appearing around the circumference of all 4 tyres and after doing some research I could no longer trust the Coopers. I fitted 275/65 17 BFG A/Ts and couldn't be happier. There are other options out there and I think the price you have been quoted is high so shop around some tyre places and see what you can get and for how much. The Pirellis, Yokohamas, Goodyears and BFG's all have lots of supporters.

Oh and the new regs? I wont be holding my breath....

Bridgestone is also a good option, done 85k so far since new all on bridgestones, very happy with them. First set were passenger now on light truck.

Oops forgot about the B word. Sorry Hutch. As I said there are plenty of options and you aren't limited to Cooper ATRs. Have a read in this thread and see what opinions there are from people who have used the tyres and where they have used them and what they think...

Thanks for that Micheal... The BFG's were also another tyre on my list so looks like they may move up a few places, on top of the Coopers (I have heard similar reports about the coopers struggling off road in certain conditions) And yes, I thouight those prices were slightly high...

                            Cheers!
