I settled for KYB Scorchers from Autopro Hahndorf. They're doing the deed for me, but I installed King Springs in the front and Dobinsons in the back as well. Mine's a 2009 ZR.

Give Zordo a call and tell him what you plan on using the car for and how much you want to spend.
I ended up going with the Bilstein/Dobinsons combo and am over the moon with them.

Hi, Scrubby , Mate I'm at Lobethal and I know the Auto Pro guys at Hahndorf . Can I ask why you chose different springs for front and back rather than OME or Opposite Lock ?? complete ?? Mt Barker 4X4 SA do ARB and also at Mt Barker Opposite lock now at AutoBarn?? I do a fair bit of towing with her but I'm sick of the wollowing and rocking .The other half doesn't know or chooses to ignore it but as I have had to sit in the passenger seat for a time I've realized just how bad it is . I really don't want a lift as I have taller tyres 275x65x17 . . Opposite-lock only offer at a minimum 40mm . I have the SX .I wouldn't change her for anything at the moment as for towing and turning cannot beat her . I have stuck a 3" exhaust on her ss and that made an enormous difference especially for towing gets a bit scary when I look down and see 110 ks . anyway Cheers Foxy

Hi Shamal & Foxy,

I chose Kings KTFS-101 for the front, then had to experiment with springs for the back that didn't lift too much. All of the Kings springs lifted way too much but the Dobinson's C59-323 gave only about 20mm more lift than the fronts so I settled for them. When towing or with a load of about 100-200kg in the back she sits pretty much level. I chose the KYB shockers 'cos Mauro talked me into them but I've had no reason to complain. I haven't got my final height figures to hand but some lift is unavoidable with the current crop of stock springs. The ZR wallowed like buggery when I bought it. It was four years old then with 58,000 km. The springs and shockers tightened it up nicely, but a sports car it ain't... And an ARB Sahara bar dropped the front a bit as well.

Having said all that, if I was to replace the shockers I'd probably be looking at Bilsteins, but at the time I was wanting to spend less than the 4WD guys were quoting.

I'm running Bridgestone D697's LT265-60-R18 on the stock 18" alloys so tyre height is standard.

Foxy, Seeing you're not too far away we can probably get together sometime and compare. I'm thinking 3" exhaust as well so I'd be interested in seeing yours.

Shamal, I'm set up for towing but haven't done much yet. So far though I'm pretty happy with the set-up...

Hi , Scrubby , Mate that wouldn't be a problem . I'll get in touch privately by mail . My 3" system is home made but fitted by the exhaust guys in Richmond Adelaide. AAA exhaust I think are the guys . .I bought the bits on Ebay all 316 stainless, Mate I couldn't get rid of the OE box quick enough . The difference well you have to experience it yourself but it is very noticeable especially the extra torque when towing .Just one question when they fit the Bilsteins is there a lift as that is what I'm trying to avoid?? Hey Foxy48,

The rolling and lurching is predominantly related to your coil springs and a mismatch in front and rear suspension frequency ratio. Suspension frequency is the rate at which your springs compress and rebound.

The 150 Prado in factory setup runs very stiff front coils, above 750lb/in, and soft rear coils, typically around 200lb/in.

What this means in practice is that it is very easy to set up a pitching or rolling motion which the factory struts/shocks can't easily cycle out.

This is quite a common problem in 120/150/FJ, and it becomes even more noticeable if you load up the cargo area.

I'd suggest running a softer front setup, no more than 660lb/in, and a higher rate coil in the back, eg, 270lb/in or more.

Bilsteins struts and shocks are probably your best bang for buck at the lower cost end of the market, take a look at your strut and shock options here for Bilsteins;

We are talking about the shorty here. I haven't got my numbers to hand but if I recall correctly they gave over 60mm lift when I didn't want any lift at all necessarily. Lighter weight on the back with 500mm or so shorter wheelbase. It was a pain in the butt. The Dobinson's C59-323 were the fourth set of springs that I tried. People might talk about spring rates and so on but practically you have to go with what you can get... And manufacturers might quote part numbers for the Shorty but go a bit vague if asked whether they've tested them...

Most after market coils will give a lift compared to the factory coils, for instance see here;

Many after market manufacturers also make "factory" oem replacement coils which are supposed to give the same factory ride height, but which rarely do.

As far as I'm aware, the rear suspension geometry of the 3-door 150 is the same as the long wheel base version.

The KTRS-102 is 365mm free length, 260lb/in compared to the factory rear coils of 375mm and 212lb/in, so getting over 60mm of lift from the KTRS-102 seems unusual, are you certain about the lift it gave?

It is possible the 3-door uses a different rear OEM coil, do you have your original factory coils by chance? It is straight forward to determine their spring rate.
