  • Maxtrax Mounting Kits

Have just purchased the new style maxtrax and also got the maxtrax mounting pin set. Am now trying to work out how to use the mounting pin set. I have a 150 series with the sports style bars from Toyota which are the Rhino sports bars. The Maxtrax mounting pins have a 10mm male thread so I thought 10mm nyloc nut in the channel of the sports bars and a locking nut on top. Problem is the 10mm nyloc nut or any 10mm nut won't fit in the sports bar channel so am now trying to work out how to mount it. I don't want to buy new roof bars and I don't know that you can get the commercial bars for the 150 anyhow. Anyone already crossed this bridge?

Thought of making up some 'c' brackets so I can mount the bracket to the roof bars with the readily available rhino kit and then the mounting pin set to the top of the c brackets but am happy to hear other ideas or what others have done.

    Cheers
    Jason

You can buy M10 channel nuts to fit. Best to bring the kit and your roof bars to your roof rack dealer and try. I haven't seen what the maxtrax kit looks like so can't make much comment. Can you post a picture?

Thanks Samo and Andrew for the replies. I will look to see if I can grind enough off the nuts for them to fit.

I will post some pictures of the mounting pins. I did take them in to the roof rack store in Boothby st at kedron and they didn't have a solution unfortunately.

Will try and get some pictures up in the next couple of days. Thanks again

Last time I spoke to Brad (Maxtrax) he mentioned there was a Rhino (I think it was) nut that fits a few types of installations. Maybe a quick email to him might get a result??
I have a set but haven't looked into mounting them yet.
          Cheers, Leon

Has anyone fitted the mounting pins to any type of roofrack yet? I have the pins and am looking for a roofrack and it would be good if the two could go together!

Looking at the pins it seems that the thread is way to long for any C-Channel type roofrack (eg Rhino or Windcheetah). It seems to me that if the pin thread is screwed into a nut in the channel then the mounting pin, and hence maxtrax will sit up off the roofrack by a quite a way. I could be missing something obvious though.

Looking at the Maxtrax website, the mounting kit as a M10x40mm thread. I don't see how this would be useful either in mounting onto a roofrack unless you drill a hole in the roofrack itself.

                Hi amts,

Looking at the website, it would appear that the new MkII MaxTrax has a keyhole on each corner. The mount kit consists of four keyhole shaped mounts that are in two sections so that the upper part can be rotated to retain the MT's under it. I think you will find that many roofrack crossbars will take M10 nuts, thereby explaining the choice of thread.

It all seems a bit too fiddly to me. Lining up bolts with captive nuts is tricky at the best of times. Doing this with 4 keyhole fittings would be a real test of my patience. Add mud and rain for extra fun.

I'll be keen to read experiences from users, but I just can't see this as being as quick and versatile as the humble strap.

                    Michael,
My point was that the M10 thread is too long and will bottom out on the roofracks.

Took a few photos today and Andrew is right the threads are too long for this type of bar.

Well, nothing a hacksaw couldn't fix, I suppose. You wouldn't want to be drilling through a roofrack and have a nut exposed underneath as that would defeat the purpose of making the mounting kit a security device.

The other problem I can see is that only one pair of holes can be mounted directly onto the roof racks. The other pair at the other end would have to be strapped down as I don't see the likelihood of roof bars being exactly the same centre distance apart unless you have roofracks on roof rails or have a 90 series with roofracks mounted to the gutter.

Fair enough. I guess MaxTrax has designed a one size fits all mount. Out with the hacksaw.

Has anyone asked MaxTrax for their installation instructions?

I sent an email to Maxtrax today asking for clarification on this.
They directed me to this page on their website: http://www.maxtrax.com.au/mtxmps which shows the fitting to a bar, in which it appears they have drilled through the bar.

                            I was also told:
The pins are designed as a universal fit for most roof rack systems.
For the channel type bars (like Rhino) its probably best to put a flat square plate on top of the bar then use a 'channel' nut
However re-reading this I'm not sure whether he is referring to the Rhino bars or an actual roofrack with this comment?

I agree, but that's exactly what their instructions say to do:
