  • Changing the position of the Winch Lever ???

    Guys.....

Hoping that most winches are the same when it comes to re-positioning the Winch Engage - Disengage Lever.... But I've recently got a winch for the Prado and went to install it today and noticed the lever is in the wrong spot. From what I can gather, I assume I have to remove the rope prior to being able to access some of the screws to enable the winch to be pulled apart to allow the re-positioning of the gearbox housing.... is this correct ?? Any tips I need to know b4 hand ?? The winch is TRex brand winch, so I'm assuming that most winches are the same when it comes to dis-assembling, etc

Not familiar with that brand but you are on the right track. Winches are pretty simple, if you are handy with the spanners it's not a big job. If you search around there is a thread about it somewhere. I think chippy did a winch rebuild thread as well which might be worth a read.

You can leave the rope attached. You will simply need to undo the bolts securing the gearbox to the body, rotate the housing until the clutch lever comes to the right spot and then replace the bolts. You don't need to pull the gearbox away from the housing.

Most manufacturer websites provide a skeletonised drawing showing locations of relevant bolts, etc if you don't have a diagram as is normally supplied with the winch out of the box.

This is out the ARB Sahara bar install guide. I followed this when I needed to rotate my Magnum 9K.

I got one of the drawings as follows:

But from looking at the pic the bolts are accessed from the rope side and not the gearbox side.....

As long as you careful and don't damage the seals, yes just undo the bolts and rotate it.

              Cheers

Have a look at the Tigerz11 vids on YouTube, there's one on changing the clutch position.

                Here it is - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt-VpTs4AUY

General principle is the same for other winches.

I ended up finding a PDF version of rotating the gearbox.... I just had to use 2 screwdrivers to help lever the gearbox off. I simply tried removing the 2 6mm hex bolts yesterday, thinking the gearbox would lift off, but it didn't and I didn't want to force it until I had some idea of the correct way of pulling it apart. After reading the PDF file I was on the right track but just needed the extra help of 2 screwdrivers to help slowly lever it off. Once it started moving it was find. It was also a good chance to add some extra grease as well. Will try and fit it tomorrow.... One good thing I found with the ARB Bullbars.... a good amount of room in there to easily install the winch + the control box as well which keeps it all hidden..... just hope I've rotated the gearbox that I can access the lever.... I'll guess I'll find out tomorrow.......

I assume most people install a isolating switch to isolate the 12v to the winch when not in use??

Yeah I installed an isolating switch under the bonnet (400amp). Didn't want my son playing with the remote ( which i keep in the glove box) and damaging the winch.

I have a switch on the dash which isolates the 12volt winch controller feed. I've heard stories of turds unspooling a winch, feeding over the roof of the fourby to the tow bar and putting a short across the feed. end result is the turret cut in two...

OK, I finally got the winch installed but sorting out the right position for the lever was a PITA. I finally had to trim some of the front bumper where it was cut off when the ARB Winch bar was installed.... Every position I tried the lever either hit on the bar when u turn it or rubbed on part of the bumper section......

For those that have a ARB Winch Bar with a winch installed, what position did u find the best position to access the lever ???
