  • Cargo Water Tank

    Hey All!

    Water on long trips...

I’ve been thinking about this issue for a while now and have come up with a plan but need some help...
Here is my proposal; A Rear Cargo Area Water Tank - This eliminates the need for storing water under your car or on the roof rack - which from reading a number of posts on here seems to be a pain either way.... I reckon we could make a water tank - either out of metal or very hard plastic that pits in the cargo area (with baffles to stop the water splashing around whilst 4 wheeling... and it would be strong enough to sit your fridge on! What to you think??
Things to note.. if you have luggage hooks as i have (from pelican parts) and VERY useful for strapping down fridges/gear etc - they could be still be used to do that job as well has hold this theoretical water tank in place and your gear with a bit of extra rope.. Also very easily removable when you want to use the back seats!

What i need is someone in Melbourne (obviously recommended by pradopoint members who is 1 willing to give it crack/make it, water tank specialist? and 2 if enough people are interested in my little concoction... maybe order a few of these at the same time to make the said tester happy?

    Thoughts are welcome!!

There is one major negative about flat water tanks and that is if your vehicle is not parked on level ground, a large percentage of the water can move away from the water outlet - rendering the tank near useless. You also end up with very weak water flow (iif it is gravity fed).

My suggestion would be to slide the middle seats to their forward position and build a tank in the gap behind the seats.

I'm sure it could be done. Dollium make one already - http://www.dolium.com.au/Retail_Cata...45FV_item.html.

We had a flat metal tank in the back of our double cab ute back in the mid 1980's. Except it held Diesel not water. Just sat in the back of the tray, and the loads all sat on top of it. It enabled us to drive from Zambia through to South Africa on a touring holiday without filling up at the servos in Zimbabwe where there were fuel shortages. (We had to hide it under the loads to avoid fuel import duties when crossing the borders! )

Accessing the contents wasn't an issue, we just siphoned out of the fill plug into the main tank with a 12v electric pump powered off the cigarette lighter.

From memory it was metal and just welded up by a local steel fabricator with a top mounted screw filler plug similar to those on 44 gal drums.

          Awesome - ok so
Flat water tank will require a pump of some sort - fairly cheap and easy to do.

Vertical water tank - has anyone got one installed? photos maybe? How far forward do the 2nd row seats have to go??
for 200 bucks its a great space saver and solves a lot of problems!

              Cargo Water Tank

I've seen heaps of vertical plastic ones at shows that fit behind the rear seats or cargo barrier.
I think one of the mainstream mobs did them? ARB, Tjm, black widow?

I have one of these, very handy and sits above the rear axle. The tank is always shielded from the sun and that is good!!

We've got one of these tanks.

We have it bolted to the drawer unit, with a hose running to the rear of the Prado with a tap in the end. I'll see if I've got a pic of it somewhere if you want

Thanks REV! Looks good for a stainless steel tank, ORS do a great job.
How many liters does it acutally hold? on the webpage it read as can weigh up to 70kg.. i am assuing the tank itself will wieght as least 15kg and hold around 55lt of water?

Whitey1. I would love some photos of this install as well if you dont mind?
do you have a cargo barrier? i am assuming you can recline the 2nd row seats once installed?

My tank is 35lt there is a bigger one but you would have trouble fitting a fridge in. ORS reckon, you cant have the big tank and a fridge unless you have the fridge pack setup. I have the standard 2 drawers with the fridge on top of one of the drawers. This tank and my camper gives me 190 liters of water.

What I really like about this tank, is that it lies directly above the rear axle.

REV - Directly over the axel is very appealing but only 35lt.... i dont have a camper as yet... we are still trying to keep everything to the car... and carry tents on the roof rack etc...hmmmm...

Whitey1 - Can you post up some photos on your tank in action? Pretty Please?
