  • Alternative mounting locations for UHF antenna?

Guys, i'm holding on putting on a ARB bar on the front of my rig for a while, but in the meanwhile need somewhere to mount my UHF antenna. I don't really like the Z bracket that mounts to the engine bonnet, and looking at alternative options.

I've seen these on a FJ crusier, and curious if there is something simular for the prado.

Have you thought about something like this?

Im sure it wouldn't get as good a coverage as some antenna's but I can still hear vehicles a good 2-3 kms away with this small antenna that I use around town and is perfect for a convoy.

There is also the longer antenna that I attach for the longer trips.

    Cheers,

I have a simple right angle bracket on my roof rack. Very low profile and I just run a 6" 1/4 wave on it. Good for about 10km in open country.

I have mine on the awning and it folds down to get inside undercover carparks. Also much better reception with the antenna up high.

Being in a similar predicament, I finally settled on using a ZCG magnetic mount that matches the ZCG ZN4-77 antenna. It sits in the middle of the roof just above the front seats. It doesn't need the ground plane section of the antenna (the chromed cylinder part) because the roof is acting as the ground plane. Because I only use it when on trips, not around town, its not a hassle to fit or remove it. I run the cable in through the second row door and to the radio body.

It holds well even at 100++ km/hr and so far no marking on the roof although I am scrupulous about cleaning the bottom of the magnet. Has hit the odd low branch and no issues.

Whilst ours in on the bullbar, Im waiting for AMTS to hurry up and make his antenna bracket for the spare wheel (hint hint). We do quite a bit of shooting and using the grey AE4705 (thick stocky fibreglass GME antenna) a few have fallen over because you cant see then through a rifle scope...

I like that and looks smart too!

Do you still have the option of mounting a rear light with it?

                  Hi Su888,

The wheel spacer (required to fit the antenna mount bracket) comes with the required light mount bracket, so the answer is Yes

                    Hi Guys

Iv seen it on this forum but cant for the life of me remember who it was..

Someone mounted an antenna on the roof rails with some fabricated bracket that allowed it to swivel into a horizontal position for carparks and such.. Does anyone know who this was as it was exactly what i need!!

                    Cheers

Can either mount with the old Scala type fold down OR put a 4" stubbie onto a roof rack cross bar (mounts for these are about $12 - 25 depending, or cut from a piece of 5 mm Ali plate). Run the cable up the side of your windscreen with a couple of dabs of goop and into the roof (rail) gap.

Could tap the rail in a 1950 mm clearance car park depending on tyres

                            veeseess,

Plug up the holes on your Kaymar bracket, mine got water in their and
as it's not painted on the inside the bracket rusted, told them about it but
they obviously don't listen to consumer feedback.
