  • Anybody have the Polaris in dash GPS unit???

Just curious if anybody is running the polaris in dash gps unit? My local distributor is very positive about the unit and i have been given a reasonable price and it will come with Hema Maps. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I had a Polaris NG7200 installed in Oct 2011. It is the model with the 2 rear cameras, one for the Prado and one for the caravan (very handy items).
It worked very well until in Sept 2012 when I had the street maps updated. After that it regularly just rebooted itself when I started the car and I had to go into the settings and redo everything, radio stations, voice for GPS directions, etc, etc, etc. Got to be very annoying. It would also freeze after a few hours of running the GPS and needed to be rebooted again. I had the unit removed and I sent it to Polaris in Sydney for assessment.
When it was returned, they said not to have the GPS running all the time but to use only as required. I still have the rare screen freeze but a soft reboot fixes that easily. Otherwise, the unit does all I want.
They may have sorted this sort of problem with the later models. Lets hope so.

If your talking about the NG7200, it's a piece of crap!

The GPS frequently freezes and requires you to reset the unit, Ozi takes over 10 minutes to load if you havent used it for some time, when I plug a USB in to play music ( a 16 gig one with about 2000 songs on it) on shuffle mode it only plays songs from say A to D instead of the entire library, on Ipod with the same number of songs, forget about trying to select a particular song or artist if you aren't able to stop and fiddle with it for 5 minutes or until you give up (whatever comes first)
If you don't start the car for a couple of days, it loses it daylight saving time on the clock (although that wouldn't worry you)

With the unit off I can put the car into reverse and the radio will come on by itself.
This the second unit I've had, the first was replaced under warranty after 2 weeks as it kept freezing.
      Would I recommend it? No!
I wish I had spent a bit more money and bought a better unit like maybe Kenwood or Pioneer .

      Just my 2 cents worth.

Edit: I should also mention that I bought it in October 2011 after it was promoted in a certain 4WD magazine. The free hard Drive that was part of the off shat itself in less than 12 months.

I believe the part no is PID# 3619 so not sure if it is different but it is designed with fascia to suit the 150

          Hi Guys,
Just tried to source info on the Polaris GPS model #PID 019R supposedly designed for a Prado..............you would have thought I had asked someone to solve .... "the meaning of Life"!!!
On the web it seems quite capable so I contacted a Queensland agent at Springwood and was told they hadn't seen one, had no info and for any specific info to contact Polaris in Sydney.
A call to Sydney resulted in ".....we don't have any info on the specifications or what's required to fit one." I asked them how they sold their products when you cannot find out about their models..........she said "people just ring and order them????" It ticked all the boxes up 'till then but unless someone has any info I think I will go back to researching the Hema HN6 or the new HN7?? Shame it doesn't dash mount.

Very strange, I have always found them to be very helpful I assume your talking about Poron the importers of the unit?

I have a PID3119 in my 120, the unit is excellent, I don't have any problems with both street by street navigation or running OZI explorer. Both versions are up and running in about 10 seconds from cold start ie swapping between programs and instantly once the unit has booted after starting the car.

The unit is simple plug and play, with mine was just remove old radio from mounting bracket, mount new radio and plug it in, came with adapter plugs that could only plug into the respective old radio plugs and the correct socket on the new radio. I may have had to run a wire to pickup the reversing lights for the camera and the camera wires etc but that was all, you probably already have a reversing camera so that won't be an issue, if not the wiring will already be there and has been covered on PP before. I also purchased the tyre pressure unit, again just plugs into the radio, instructions are included, any issues just ring up Poron and ask to speak to one of the service technicians and they'll help you out.

            Cheers

I have the hema app on an iPad which I take with me, does all my off road mapping and is excellent value for money if you already have an iPad. Use a garmin GPS for normal gps duties and have a pioneer head unit in my 80 for reverse camera, music, etc. I find this is a great set up for me as it allows me to have a great quality radio, a GPS I use in my work ute that isn't an expensive and enticing to steal hema navigator, and finally the iPad is with me anyway so what is the difference if I have it working too...

Just the way I do it, and am planning to do it when I park a prado in the driveway in the very near future..

Overall im pretty happy with it. I have the hema maps loaded on it and its a little slow to start up navigation mode but i try to not be in a hurry anyways. All other functions are perfect. Steering wheel controls work and i have wired up the factory reverse camera feed to the unit with some help from the forum.

I've now had the Parrot Asteroid Smart for over 2 years and it works faultlessly, including 3 firmware updates. Also fully integrated with steering controls.
