  • WDH for caravan towing

Hi new to this forum, so I apologise if this has been already answered. We have just purchased a 2010 Prado GXL and wanted to know if we need WDH to tow our van that is 2300kg loaded? We are thinking yes but would like to know what system is recommended. Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance

Short answer is yes.....WDH would be needed.

Another option to Hayman Reece WDH is the McHitch product:

      Web site details below:

      http://mchitch.com.au/

We have been McHitch customers for over 4 years and recently upgraded our original Platinum Series Hitch to the new Auto coupler.

Also, we have just ordered the WDH roller conversion kit.......another new product. Website info below:

      http://mchitch.com.au/shop/index.php...index&cPath=21

The webpage above also details pricing for the McHitch WDH kits together with the roller conversion kit.

BTW......our van is around the 2300kg loaded and the Prado 150 handles it with ease. We have also fitted Polyair's which also help. We use 5psi in the Polyair's unloaded and 20psi Loaded. Also no problem opening the rear door with the McHitch Auto Coupler when the van is connected.

We have no affiliation with McHitch, just satisfied customers. McHitch also has excellent back-up and after sales service and is an Australian company based in Lithgow NSW with their own manufacturing facility/factory.

      Cheers,
      K&K

Let's play spot the McHitch salesman!! How many times can you use the term "McHitch" in the one post? :-)

We use a Hayman Reece, but our van is around 1500kg loaded. Not sure of the ball weight. We have ARB suspension with medium springs in the rear. Works well.

Have OME suspension and have towed the van Tandem 2T for the last 3 years and clocked up about 15,000 odd k's so far and have never had a WDH.

Yeh yeh have heard all the pros of having one and the cons of one but have never ever had the need or felt like needing one.
Car drops when hooked up but not too much (medium springs), front end only lifts about 10-15mm. Would probably get air in the rear if anything.

Have driven through really bad wet stormy roads, windy days, up and down mountains, winding roads you name it and never had any issues with light front end feel or bad braking. Have had to lock it up a few time because of stupid drivers and still behaved well.
I think the real key to being safe is loading up the van properly in the first place. Of course thinking ahead about idiots on the road in front helps as well but know your limit and set it up correctly and you shouldn't have issues.
