  • VMS Touring X series - Multi Media unit

Looking to upgrade the shock standard stereo unit in the GXL, with something that has built in gps and off road maps ideally, without costing the earth.

Not keen on a cheaper Ebay chinese unit, or paying over $1600 for a Kenwood from a reputable car audio shop in Perth. After a bunch of research, the VMS appears to have all the features I am after, including quite extensive street mapping and VMS Off Road maps. You can get a Hema add on as well. Price wise its about $1,000 plus install.

I was at ARB this arvo and the guys said that they had heard some good things about it, as opposed to another option.

Has anyone got one, know anyone who has and provide any feedback ? in particular, I'm keen to know how good the mapping is, particularly off road. be good to know if the stereo works too

    cheers

I have the VMS 700HDX portable GPS (with Outback Adventure Pack map package) which I from GPSOZ (http://www.gpsoz.com.au) in Sydney. It came with lots of maps e.g. in 1:25k scale NSW, Vic, Qld, and WA Topo maps, Camps7, Hema maps, Gregory's touring maps etc.

Works very well. Off road maps are very good (Topo maps at 1:25k are very good and I use them most often). Happy with the purchase.

I also have the VMS 700HDX fully agree with the comments above.
We looking into GPS options i was advised not to go with the VMS in dash unit as the supplier had a few come back with problems.
He did say the support from VMS was very good and they got the units fixed / replaced quickly but it is the inconvenience of having to take the car back to get the unit fixed.
For me if the portable one needs to be fixed i can just send it back for repair.
In dash would be a neater option but happy with what i have.

I bought the VMS 7023 for my 120 back in 2009 and paid an absolute fortune for it ($3,000). It worked well when it worked but has given intermittent problems until it gave up completely a few weeks ago. I approached VMS to get it serviced/fixed and they told me they don't support the older units any longer. I can't comment on the more recent units but I am bitterly disappointed with the reliability of the VMS unit and also the service and support from VMS.
I'm looking at taking the matter further with the ACCC.
