  • Audible warning indicating excessive engine temperature

    Hello all
I am wondering if any member uses an after market device that sounds a warning when the engine temperature is excessive. There are situations when 4by4 driving a person can't keep monitoring gauges.
    Regards, Doug

I used to have a Discovery and a lot of guys fitted one as the temp gauge didn't work well.

It was called an 'engine saver kit' - take a look on the AULRO forum for info.

It should be easily fitted to any type of car.

Engine saver has a kit for the prado too, although they are low water alarms rather that temperature alarms. Good to have one though, I am going to be fitting one soon.

        Cheers, Nova

Yes you're right now that I think back. However on discos high temp was usually due to blown head gasket that ended up with loss of water, so it worked both ways!

Using an OBD2 device (from ebay) and the Torque Pro App for Android phones, you can monitor coolant and trans temps and set an alarm. It does mean that you need turn the app on everytime you drive but that can be done using an automation app such as Automate It.

Thanks for the feedback. Its not water levels that worry me. Perhaps there is an electronic circuit that could built from a kit that may do the job - I will check with JayCar and Altronics. It cannot be that hard.

I had an engine watchdog Tm4 on my 80 series which worked well. It could do 2 temps so I did Gearbox and engine temps.
                    Easy to fit also.

The closest I have is my thermo fan controller. Its the size of a 52mm gauge and doubles as my water temp gauge. It allows me to control the fan "on" temp but on top of that has a very bright red led that lights up when the fans kick in. Its also a digital temp readout. My audible warning for when engine bay temps are climbing is the roar of 2100CFM being pushed around the engine bay.
