We run an ArkPak 620 with a 100Ah AGM battery. Runs a CFX50 at -1, LED lights and phone/tablet charging duties for around 3 days during summer before hitting 50%SOC. Although I never thought we'd use it at the time, the built in inverter has actually come in handy on a number of occasions. The only downside I've found so far is the weight.

Get a normal battery box, AGM battery 100Ah or more, a couple of Anderson plugs (50A) and Anderson Powerpoles (30). This will set you back about $400. Add a switch and voltmeter if you want to know the state of charge of the battery. Buy some crimping tools and you're set for a DIY battery box.

Can't recall what we paid but don't think it was that much. Have yet to use it in the field but might try it out over Christmas to see how it performs on the fridge with solar input to top it up.

It's great having camping as a hobby. A few months ago after work, we had a power blackout at home. All ll I wanted to do was veg out and watch a movie on SBS OnDemand. Great, now what do I do? Read a book with a torch and listen to my tummy grumble? :-|

My neighbour had whinged about having no internet access, which gave me an idea. Phone lines don't die in blackouts, so I got my trusty battery pack and plugged the modem into the inverter. Voila! Internet connectivity Next I connected the LED strip light for some ambient light before grabbing my camping stove and cooking up some snacks. The blackout lasted nearly two hours, so did my movie Snacks only lasted about 5 minutes (surely you needed to know that)...

I have an ArkPak 730 with an 85Ah Fullriver AGM battery in it. The only reason I went that way was because I got $100 off the ArkPak and the battery for half price. Any alternative with the same features would be just as good IMO if you're going to spend $$$ on portable power, you want to maximise the amount of juice you get for the lowest dollar. My 85Ah battery gives me 60 hours running my 40L Engel, LED strip lights and occasionally charging phones. I'm sure it would run a 40L Waeco quite a bit longer. A couple of times I've camped in rainforest areas for days where solar panels are next to useless - I think it's important to have enough battery capacity to run for two or three days - but obviously that depends on your own needs.

My parents used to have two Waeco RAPS 36Ah battery packs to run their fridge. They'd constantly have to check that the fridge was still on and swap the batteries over to charge them. A cumbersome setup and now those batteries are fairly tired. These days they have 200Ah of juice in their camper trailer and only use the little batteries if they want to go on a picnic or power 12V stuff away from the camper.

Probably the most valuable options on a battery pack when you're out camping are the charging options. The ability to charge it in the car when you're driving and the ability to charge it with solar power.

CFX50 for three days is pretty surprising. I find mine averages at around 2-3ah, in fairly warm conditions, which is 50amps/day.

Wasnt in a bag when we first got the ArkPak either. Been away for plenty of long weekend trips and never had to charge it. Have always come home with over 50% SOC (corrected for temperature). The only time we've needed to top it off is our Gascoyne/Myrchison trip. Charge every few days from solar to keep it healthy.

I use to keep a running log of power usage vs SOC when we first got it but have stopped bothering now. Fairly comfortable to get at least 3 days in mid 30 temps with the fridge at -1 before I want to look at charging.
