  • Yakima Sparetime spare-mounted bicycle rack

Thought I'd share this because I couldn't find out for myself without just buying one and seeing if it fits. And it does. 6mm plate fits between door mount and wheel and effectively spaces out your wheel so even better for the large tyre inclined.

Bolts straight on, of course the vanity cover has to be discarded first but surely everybody on this forum has already done that right?

Nice rack, but I dunno if I'd want that extra weight at length bouncing on the door. Can you brace it with a nylon strap to the top of the door?

Good point; I wouldn't use it on rough roads, it's more of an accessory for when the car is in urban use. I have seen spare wheels crack the door skin when spaced out which is partly why I am happy to continue running skinny wheels. (The wheel was spaced out not me).

I got one of these from Torpedo7. Not as small as yours but I am very happy with it. I wanted to still be able to open the rear door with the rack on (no bikes) and be able to fit it without swapping hitches/balls. Best of all they're cheap.

I got one of these. http://www.isi-carriers.com/

Possibly overkill but it works really well. You can access the back by dropping the carrier down but it is a real PITA to do.

I find the iSi carrier brilliant and easy to use. No way could I use any of the others with the fatbike (which is fitted with skinny 4" trail tyres in this pic and not the double plus fat sand tyres I normally run).

Hey this post is better value than I thought.
I use a towball mounted rack when I have more than 2 bikes. But am about to get fatties with 4.7" tyres. So with your experiences can you guys tell me if super fat tyres fit on those racks?

              Cheers,
              G.

I run 4.8" Vee Snowshoe XLs on the Muru for the beach. Knobs suitably trimmed (all except the centre row removed!). The iSi carrier is the only one I know that takes the bigger wheels and tyres. I also have a gripsport rack but it won't. Also the grip rack uses cranks to support the bike and I don't like that with carbon cranks.

Happy to take more pics if you want.

No need for more pics I am sold. Thanks guys.

PS pricey innit but I know there's bugger all else that works for fatties.

Gordon make sure you tell iSi what you drive and get the locking nut which holds the rack tight in the hitch. You could try telling George that you saw his old Muru on Michael's blue Prado... Never know your luck.

iSi also do racks for 4 bikes.

Where did you get that number plate holder from? There's a tail light kit on the Torpedo7 site but it doesn't show how they deal with the number plate.

Coming from Thule lockable roof mounted racks, do any of these have the option to lock the bikes to the rack?
Say if you pop in to the supermarket and need to leave them on the car.

I just use a plastic coated wire lock thing. You can put a lock through the pins that hold the carrier to the hitch in lieu of the R clips.

Cheers mate, so a separate cable lock is needed then.
Are there any racks similar to the iSi ones that aren't $800?
