  • Rear Air Scoop or Spoiler for 150

I'm a new 150 Prado owner and can't believe how filthy that back door and window gets. I've searched the web and this forum for anything regarding a spoiler/air scoop for the 150 but can't seem to find anything. That huge spoiler containing the wiper is creating so much low pressure below it that everything is getting sucked onto my rear door. I've read enough to know I'm not alone at least.

I remember back in the day of EH Holdens and Ford wagons there were even scoops that went down the rear window pillars and pulled air flow from the sides of he car and deflected it back across the rear to reduce the dust build up.

Does anyone know of a product to fit on top of the rear spoiler or like the old '60's scoops that are available for the 150 (they are available for the earlier model Prados).

    Thanks.

Maybe try vortex generators to break up the drag effect on the spoiler.

        Will watch this closely.
The link AMTS points to only solves the problem of dust getting to the gap between the door and the car at the top (and as soon as you open it, all that dust falls into the car).
After an outback trip in Sep last year, I'm still getting red dirt coming out of the spoiler each car wash. It's a terrible design.

As you say, something like this would be the go.

i have noticed a lot less dust build up along the top of the seal since i positioned the shovel to deflect the air towards the top of the door.
Not perfect but has reduced the dust build up enough so i don't get covered in dust when i open the back door.

The main priority would be to remove the dust buildup on top of the door seal. The dust on the window itself can be dealt with using the wiper and water jets. Or use suction cups and thin sheet and place it on the D pillar. So you would put it on before a long drive on a dirt road and remove it when you're parked to prevent someone knocking off with it.

Thanks AMTS. That would solve part of the problem.

Simplesi's picture is about what we need, just adapted to fit the 150's wiper housing on top of the door. I think it would be easy enough to make the shape out of Perspex or sheet steel/alloy, it's just the matter of fixing it to the roof or the top of the existing wiper housing that's got me concerned.

I like the shovel idea, same principle and it seems like it helps. I think I need to climb up the back there and have a good look re mounting possibilities. I've only had the car a couple of weeks (shows you just how quickly the problem shows up- just where does Toyota test their off road prototypes, round and round the company carpark ?)

I went out for a couple of days and see below for the results of a little air scoop experiment. You may snigger, you may laugh and some may give me a little nod for my shed-guy innovation. It was just a proof of concept experiment but the results were not just positive but outstanding.

On our first foray in the "new" car about two weeks ago, the rear windscreen was all but opaque with dust except for the arc of the rear wiper. These photos show the car clean and just after the scoops were fitted. The final ones show the accumulated dust on the rear door and were taken after 7 hours on the dirt. Just look at that dust free screen but note the crud all over the door handle shroud, spare wheel spokes etc. The dust on the rear lip was almost a cm thick.

One added bonus, after travelling 40 klm on the tar after these pictures were taken, the clean highway airflow through the pipes blew most of the dust off the door and a lot of the dust off the boot lip.

And yes, that's bluetack. Withstood sustained 110 kph highway speeds and even a spurt to 120 when passing. Still stuck firm 2 days and 600 klm later.

The idea is to now make something much neater and spoiler-like from sheet metal or preferably perspex.

You're right, I did have a chuckle. But looks like it does the job!
