  • ICOM 450 - Install

    Hi guys,

    Just a quick note to let all know that the Icom 450 fits up in behind the passenger kick panel... level with the glovebox.
    You need to remove glove box and the glove box carrier, which makes access so much more simple.

    There are three captive nuts there, and you can utilise a couple of them to mount the carry tray vertical against the passenger-side wall, right up close to the rubber boot (access to the engine bay for electrics), then route the cables in behind the glove box, where I store my handset when not in use.

    Note: the carrier tray mounts with the radio unit partly inserted, do up the bolt, then click it in.....

    Simple, but fiddly install... hardest part was cable routing.

    EDIT: See pics below;

      It's a good spot up there, I mounted my remote brake controller in the same spot.

        No mate, got lost in the moment and finished the job before I thought about posting.

        If you're really keen, I can pop off the kick panel and show you the unit mounted, but that's about it.

        What did you want to see specifically? I'll take some snaps.

          Yes mate, I reckon you could even fit a medium sized inverter up in there too... pretty good cavity.

            I need to buy a new radio as my old one has been a pain (can send, but can receive only for about 15 seconds and then there is silence, not even the background noise), and I am looking at 450 too, so just wanted to see how you installed it, but it is not urgent, but will have to buy before end of FY. I will get in touch once I have the unit, if that is OK.
            Thanks

                        Good job Archer, I mounted my Uniden under the glovebox because the Kakadu (mine's a 2009) has an extra module in that kick panel area, the base unit wouldn't fit as a result.

                        I mounted my mike holder on the driver's side of the console, just ran the lead under the console to the other side. It does mean pulling up the console but that's not all that hard. I use permanent outdoor double-sided tape because the side of the console is textured and the normal sort didn't stick too well.

                          Im fitting one of these in my 90, im surprised how heavy it is which makes me think twice about how and where I mount it.

                              If anyone is looking for another good spot centre console under the trip computer. Easy to pull out centre dash and just used zip ties to secure it to chasis bar. Used a cat6 computer cable and and plugged it into a cat5 socket next to the range selector in the dash.
