  • Coice of Snorkel for 2016 Prado - which one?

Some time soon I need to fit a snorkel to my 2016 GLX auto so seeking some advice please. Looking at either the Airtec from TJM or the ARB Safari. Not much different in the quoted price for purchase and installation between the two - $23. The TJM Airtec looks the more sleek of the two with a a smaller profile and it seem the scoop head (correct name??) sits a little higher than the ARB Safari

Interested in any comments from members who have used either item in anger on their functionality or other issues to help me decide between the two.

Its been nearly 35 years since I've owned a 4X4 so I find I'm in need of advice on lots of issues.

I have the TJM installed (I did the install myself) because I preferred the look of it

Safari you can install a cyclonic filter / Turn the head around. This isn't something you can do with the TJM airtec.

TJM airtec hugs the car so it won't catch on branches as much.

Depends what you perfer much the same both with their + and -

TJM often have sales and you can get one fitted for less than buying just a safari on its own.

There some wind noise with the safari, none with the TJM.

        Prefer safari style.
Turn head backwards, have experienced much cleaner filter.
        IMO it looks better too.
The ram affect is nothing, it's a diesel with a turbo.
Do you want all the dust & bugs from your screen as well in your air box?

Put a TJM on my 2016. Preferred the look compared to Safari. Seems to be whichever you like the look of is the winner, both do the same thing.

Lol, you'll never get enough bugs in a normal service period for it to matter. Bit like bugs in the radiator, does it matter? No.

Choose based in your preferred style, and the cost. The TJM wins easily here. Safari is a fine choice if retro 1970s is your thing and the extra $300 is not a problem.

                    Its definitely a preference thing...
I cant stand the look of the airtec...but I know they are just as good, perhaps better, than the safari.
Thats why I've ordered the safari. And I do like that I can turn the head around if required.

I've never investiated too much but I have always wondered how much water would go into an airtec snorkel when you hit a deep puddle and cover the windscreen in water.

You'll have more serious issues if you do that than just a damp filter.

Last 2 4x4's had Ironman snorkels. Never had an issue. Will be putting one on my new 2.8

it sits off the car by about 2cm, not an issue
i have never seen water in the air box.
plus you have the bleeder inside the airbox to remove water should it enter. ( Dont forget to keep this clean! )

Fascinating responses and thanks to all those that have responded. There are issues and passions either way and it seems that the Airtec and Safari argument is a bit like Ford v Holden and Daiwa v Shimano. Both have pros and cons, both have their supporters and detractors but both are good, sound products.

Have not been able to make up my mind so still interested in any user comments.
