Fascinating responses and thanks to all those that have responded. There are issues and passions either way and it seems that the Airtec and Safari argument is a bit like Ford v Holden and Daiwa v Shimano. Both have pros and cons, both have their supporters and detractors but both are good, sound products.

Have not been able to make up my mind so still interested in any user comments.

Both brands are just as good, each to their own i think.

I actually prefer the look of the Toyota one. As a matter of fact getting it installed in a few week on my 2016 VX.

If you are not swayed either way, I'd be getting a couple of quotes for each, then choose the best price...

What about drive through car washes? Scared the crap out of me with the safari! Not sure how the airtec would go/if you can go. But it might be better as less chance of it catching!

Tjm are having an eofy cash back sale at the moment

I have a monthly car wash subscription and go at least once a week no dramas. I also have a roof rack and tow bar and they don't catch.

Water definitely pours in the snorkel but it vaporises before it gets to the air filter. Even the. A damp airfilter is a good thing. But with the turbo sucking like a vacuum cleaner it would be dry in seconds.

Before you buy the Toyota one check how it connects to the air box. I.e. no hose clamps.

Thanks for all the input, I have decided on the Airtec in view of slimmer profile that hugs the vehicle a lot better - and price with TJM,s cashback offer its a bit of a no-brainer atm

DO you think the original may not be up to task?

No. IMHO The join looks more dustproof than waterproof.

The point to make is that not all snorkels and fitting are the same. Check how they are fitted and what attachment points are used. Don't assume, cause once it's fitted.....

I have a Safari, it meets my criteria.

Thanks for the tip... will look into it (I must admit, I did assume since it is, well, a Toyota accessory)

Hi iDestiny. If you dont mind me asking. What did Toyota charge for the genuine snorks. I got quoted 700 installed.

Had a chat with Toyota this morning (both parts and installation service)...

As far as the installation goes, hose clamps and silicon will be used at box (I placed a note on the file that protection against water ingress was required)

As far as warranty and wading depth goes, Toyota doesn't consider a snorkel (regardless of brand), as an accessory that increases wading depth (naturally there are other components that might be affected by water). Any water ingress to air intake (with or without a snorkel) is not covered under warranty as it is officially above the wading depth of the vehicle.

At the end of the day, it is just peace of mind (additional layer of protection, if you want to call it) when wading water. But it isn't a substitute to common sense with regards where you want to take you vehicle. Personally, I would like to keep my cabin dry and cross some water, but have some insurance if things go a little pear shaped...

                                Cheers
