  • Toyota branded snorkel

I was at the local dealer picking the car up from a service and the conversation led to a discussion on snorkels. Service bloke told me that they toyota snorkels on the shelf and could fit one at the next service.

    Does anyone have one?

    Pics?

Was there something about the factory snorkels not being sealed properly?
Double check before you go ahead with the purchase.
Also check the price as a Safari could work out cheaper?

has anyone experienced or even heard of a hydro lock event with 150 D4D prado?

I could only find one story on this site and it sounded like the water just stalled it (blocked intake) rather than destroying the engine

Are you suggesting that a snorkel is unnecessary, Brodad?

I wouldn't be doing the Cape without one, and am much happier with river crossings wearing one. I don't believe any diesel motor can cope with water injestion, and most petrols wouldn't be happy.

Depends on your intended use, and as you mention doing the Cape sure the piece of mind is worth it.

Sorry my comment has led you to jump to conclusions about my intention, however it is simply a request for information without any untoward insinuation.

Upon further reflection, I assume it is probably due to the prevalence of snorkels and other precautions taken that means there are very few hydrolock events, and perhaps the ones that do occur, owners are too embarrassed to share.

You have not heard of/experienced any specific events Corigator?

Avoiding an event such has digestion of water isnt the only reason to fit a snorkel. Providing clean air to your engine is a pretty good reason to fit one also. Having a snorkel helped to minimise significant clogging up of my air filter and even though it was checked and had to be blown out as a daily ritual, I can only imagine what condition that filter would've been like without the snorkel...

Price wise how does the Toyota brand compare? I'm looking at getting one for my 2012 GXL D4-D. I've been quoted around $650 for the Ironman snorkel supply and fit...

Did you have a precleaner on it?

No insinuation nor offence taken, Brodad.

While I haven't heard of a Prado with hydro lock, I did come across a drowned 2 week old Isuzu D-Max at Lidsdale this year. I will put up a video of the guys floating on the river / lake, when I get around to finishing it. It was snowing the previous night. The water was icy cold. They were unaware of the depth of the crossing which "looked clear through their polarised glasses"

When I winched the car out it was concluded by the diesel mechanic with us that it had suffered hydro lock.

There is very little volume above a piston at full compression in a diesel.

Thanks for sharing, I haven't seen one in the flesh but from pics it looks like they have a front mount intercooler similar to the prado? And this guy didn't have a raised intake? By the sounds of it they probably wouldn't have made it any way, but perhaps may not have destroyed the mechanical aspects of the engine.

P.s. I am interested in your username, but probably not for the same reason you chose it

No I didnt BroDad. I have the Airtek Snorkel which the intake is shaped differently and a precleaner sock is difficult to source.

It just struck me while I was driving the Cape that I was adding to the corrugations. I thought why not own the responsibility and use it as my username. - Cheers
