  • HOT WATER SHOWER SYSTEM

I fitted the shower system today, I purchased one from Aftermart Wholesale - Piranha power shower kit with pump and shower tent $500.00

It is not a bad kit although quite expensive.

The pump may be overkill for the system at 11L/m and 55 psi and I found it hard to find a space for it. I think if the pump was one size smaller it would be easier to fit and also lower the price.

The shower head is not acceptable at its current flow rate and I will need to seal off at least half the holes to save water as it will pump 20L in under 2 minutes.

I did not use the supplied switch or wiring as it is not matched to the system or environment, I instead used a encapsulated 100% waterproof switch, tinned solar cable and soldered and shrink sleeved all my joints. If I had used the supplied switch it would not lasted long as it is not a waterproof switch and would have retained moisture from engine washing etc.

    Picture 1:

I mounted the pump on the passenger side wheel arch and the heat exchanger on the firewall.

    Picture 2:

I used the bottom heater hose as it was the correct shape to simply be reused on the heat exchanger, the supplied hose in the kit was used from heat exchanger to bottom heater hose old position.

    Picture 3:

Mounting the heat exchanger was simple enough, I used one of the supplied large C clips to an existing hole on the fire wall and then made a U shaped bracket from heat exchanger to an existing spare stud on the fire wall. There was a flat bracket supplied in the kit but the holes did not match the holes in the heat exchanger and it also did not suit my selected mounting spot.

The filter is tucked away next to the pump when not in use and the hoses and shower head fit into my drawer system.

The pop up shower tent works well and does take some time to work out how to UN-pop it so it fits back in the bag !

    Regards

    Derek.

Show us idots how to unpop the shower tent and put back in the bag... ops: I still have not mastered that and maybe you have a better one. How will the filter housing hold up to the heat in the engine bay and the pump? Just a thought.

Pump and filter will be fine, I had similar pump and filter in the LC100 for 10 years with no problems.

The tent requires an exact fold over on itself, square and neat. Then simply push the remaining two sides inside in on itself. Just like the instructions. :?

I used one of the C clips to mount the Dick Smith switch (Made in Japan) encapsulated.

I have had trouble before with switches under the bonnet that are not encapsulated, my last Dick Smith switch was fitted 8 years ago and was sold with the LC100.

          hi Derek,

you list twin 23L water tanks with your truck as well - is this all connected to those tanks?

do you have photos of that installation?

The tanks are roof mounted, I use a 4m removable hose.

              Re: HOT WATER SHOWER SYSTEM

I'm not mechanically savvy so please bear with me if the answer to my question is a given!

When you installed the heat exchanger did you have to bleed/replace the coolant? Or just did a coolant top up? Just mindful of air pockets going through the cooling system.

                Re: HOT WATER SHOWER SYSTEM

I did not loose any coolant, just topped up with distilled water after.

Perhaps about 500ml, the system did not have any air locks.

At BCF, they are the type with a baffle ridge which sits well on a 25x25 sq tube.

Have you people got any info re a submersible pump that you could drop in a river and pump up to your car ? If so what head of water is possible running off 12v ?

                      Cheers Ross

Hi Derek, how do you adjust the temperature of the water outlet of the shower ?? They say to use the heater control in the car which opens and closes the heater tap to adjust the temp ?? The 120's (well at least the petrol) don't have a heater tap either in the car or under the bonnet, they only have a heater flap under the dash (part of the heater box set up) which opens and closes to control the heat in the vehicle so cant see how to control the temp of the exchanger if there is no heater tap ??? Or does the unit have its own tap of some sort to restrict the amount of flow of coolant going through the exchanger ??? ............Cheers Steve

With mine I recirculate the water into a container until the desired temp is reached, then turn off the engine and shower. I get a constant temp with no spikes if I turn off the flow mid shower. Direct heating and straight to the shower head is ok if you have loads of water (pumping from a creek) but doesn't work as well with limited water needing stop start showering.

                            Cheers Andrew
