Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

    Hi John
It was all pretty straight forward. I used this website http://www.toyota-tech.eu/legacy/Toy/ai ... 0798-3.pdf It isn't the same towbar but shows great detail how to remove the rear bumper and parts. I think the hardest part was to get the wiring harness back through 2 gromets going back inside the car. The instructions are good and refer back to the above website if your not sure but you should be fine.

      Hi Again Peter,

Thanks again for the info, l will have a look at the link.

With the previous Prado the 120 series this was also a struggle for me and this is the one thing that took the longest.

      Thanks again for the feedback.

      Regards
      John

        $700 inc fitting.
        Ryzz,

Where did you get that quote? I already have my 150 ( at a good price) but now want to fit the Toyota bar, and 3 Toyota dealers all quote around $920, supplied and fitted with wiring.

        Yowie.
Yowie, sorry for the 3 month delay in getting back to you, I must of missed this price. It was Campbelltown Toyota in NSW, the dealer name escapes me sorry.

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

Gents, I was just wondering if anyone has installed the Parkside towbar on their 150. I live in Perth and it looks like the only option is the Original, the HR and the parkside towbar. The parkside towbar does not need cutting in to the bumper, and looks great. Any known issues would be of great help.

The factory towbar has four plastic caps in four 1.5cm holes ( 2 top 2 under ) behind the tow ball on the bar . Mine had the top two missing , the chanel filled with water , rusty stains all over the back bumper , now have surface rust inside the bar . These should been left in top and bottom , dealer at South Side Toyota says seen this a few times before , great . :x

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

Just picked up a Toyota towbar off Ebay last night for $60.00. The seller is a panelbeater who removed one off a car as part of an insurance claim as it was scrtached.
New harness from Toyota is $143.00.
I intend to have a go at fitting the towbar myself and then have my local 4WD Service Centre do the wiring.
Will let you know how things go.

                Hi Dobbo
The wiring is dead easy. It will come with instructions and is all just plug and play. Hardest thing is just getting your hand down to put the gromets back in. The harness even comes with the gromets on aready sealed up, you just fit them back in the hole. Guess 30 min work.

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

Well l had a go at fitting the towbar and to be honest it was a very time consuming job, l have a VX and from a towbar view point not too bad to fit but the W/Harness well this is ridiculous with having to remove the rear quater garnish to mount the modulator, got to take the third row seat out so you can get to two self tappers on the floor, which l found absolutley ridiculous.

At the same time l ran the brake controller wire and the hot wire down under the scuff plates, however am yet to complete the connection for the brake controller at the battery and under the dash, however all in all l would say l spent well over 9hrs to fit the towbar and W/H

Any way this is my 5cents worth, those of you that are contemplating fitting the genuine towbar and W/H l would seriously consider what your getting yourself into as it is a big job IMO.

                  Good luck

                  Regards

With the Toyota instructions I had which came with the wiring harness, it didn't say to use self tappers to hold the modulator box, it came with double sided tape and alcohol wipes to stick it to the bodywork. I did it all from the hatch to access the jack.

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

Recently bought a used 2009 150 Series D4D with Toyota Factory Towbar already fitted. When I towed my caravan with the tongue in the down position the front of the van was a little low in the front even with the leveller bars fitted. I enquired with the Toyota dealer I bought the vehicle from and they were of the opinion that if I flipped the tongue over to the up position warranty would be avoided with any problems. I had the same opionion from anoter Toyota dealer. I personally couldn't see a problem as long as I was not overloading it. I decided to check with another Toyota dealer who came up with the evidence from Toyota and printed it out for me which clearly shows that the tongue can in fact be flipped over to the up position and used the same for its capacity. So there you go, wonder why the others couldn't have come up with that!!

                      Cheers, Buddy.

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

Add another one for Wynnum Towbars, great people to deal with, very strong and tidy bar and a neat fitting job, hard to beat.

When I booked the car in I asked about a spot to bolt in the valve fittings for air bags, no problem, they welded a tab to the left of the hitch (light fitting is on the right).

Towbar with air bag valve mount sitting there when I arrived.

Perfect setup, solid mount, up high and protected by the hitch.

I will have to update my details, car is VX 150 D4D.

Re: Anyone installed Toyota Factory Towbar

My VX is on it's way should be here around 8th November.
I tow a 21 foot van and need to get a tow bar fitted. Interestingly I would class my self as pretty handy but after looking at the instructions for fitting the bar it looks like it is more trouble than it is worth. I have had a quote from Speedy towbars at Underwood for $700 including wiring. The question is, do they use the Toyota harness or do the just run their own wires. Can you tell me if Wynum towbars use the Toyota wiring harness or similar?
                          Thanks
                          Mike :?

They mentioned that the tow bar was expensive because they had to buy in a "control box" for the trailer wiring.

I didn't specifically ask where it came from or who made it, give them a call, I'm sure they will be happy to help.

They don't use the Toyota wiring harness as it only comes with a 3 year warranty, they use a Hayman Reese wiring harness that plugs into the Toyota harness and has a lifetime warranty. They use their own in house tow bar which they say is stronger than the standard or HR bar. As soon as my Prado shows up I will be booking it in with them.

Don't forget to ask about Air Bag valve mounts, they welded a tab on for me at no extra cost and it's one of those things that isn't in the way if you don't use it but is bloody handy if you do
