I tested this by hand after running the lights for 1/2 hour and the lenses where relatively cool.

I chose the Philips system as it comes with big aluminum cased ballasts, which should last and do not get overly hot. I suspect slim line ballasts will get hotter.

I have also updated my installation posts with a couple of suggested improvements to the installation process.
I understand what you're saying, it was the first thing I thought when I found it too! I had non slimline ballast hids installed that time, and they were 35W, 6000k. Doesn't explain why the housing melted! Though the lenses were cool, did you touch the back end of the lights?

    Cheers

I left all lights running for 10-15mins and I was still able to comfortably touch the rear connector of the globe. The ballasts were getting warm but they are in a well ventilated area.

Great report and really helpful. However with a bullbar and winch fitted, can you say if it will still be possible to fit them if you don't remove the bumper/bullbar ?

        Thanks.

anyone want to buy a set of lightforce XGTs?

i just installed 35w kits into the low and high beam. both philips kits - awesome quality. but now the lightforce are almost useless. it's hard to see them, and they certainly don't add any distance to the high beam.

            fantastic!

Silvo I was really happy with the Philips kit, I was amazed by how good they were on a recent long night-time country trip. Interesting to hear your comments about the driving lights, I was wondering how they compared. I'm not sure I'll bother with them now.

I would really like to HID them. I'd like to use another Philips kit, but they don't make them larger than 35w, and I think your would need them to be bigger to actually make a difference.

Has anyone fitted these to the fog lights in the front bumper? How has it worked as a spotlight setup? Is it too low?

                    Thanks.

Never fitted HID's to the fog lights, a lot of people install LED ones here though.

What is the benefit of LED globes? Aside from lower power usage. Are they brighter / better light than existing globes?

Was having a troll through e crap last night and found a couple of places selling the Phillips kits for about $150 ea in various heat ratings from 4300 to 10000K, not sure if these would be genuine German built Phillips, but looked the part, and at least the sites didnt seem to be written in pidgeon English as lot of the others are, Will be going on the list of things to do for after our return from Shark Bay. Big fan of HID since they were introduced into the mining fleet.

Just wondering if anyone has fitted the autoleveling headlights and washers from a vx to a gxl so they can get the hid install engineered to keep it legal?

                              Hello cbm8880,

Light output is measured in Lumens and different lamp designs / types produce different quantities of lumens for each Watt of power put into them.

Conventional lamps (non Halogen) output approximately 15 lumens for each watt input
Halogen lamps output approximately 23 lumens for each watt
HID lamps output approximately 95 - 105 lumens for each watt
LED high output lamps output approximately 100 lumens for each watt

The above lists suggest that HID and LED lamps are almost equal and run about 4 times the output compared with Halogen lamps, the quantity of the light produced is then focussed by the reflector and lens of the light fitting and for good light control the light fitting reflector and lens needs to be large compared with the lamp. HID is a small light source similar to halogen in size and can be controlled easily in a wide or long distance driving light without redesigning the reflectors and lens of conventional light fittings so these are very suitable for a large number of uses.

LED lamps are very small and are of low wattage so you need lots of them to get a high rated input power wattage. Hence the term Light Bar. They have inbuilt reflectors which are also small so the light output is harder to control and the lights tend to be wide angle flood lights and not suitable for long distances yet. They will be improved greatly as all new technologies always are and they will be fantastic soon.

LED lights are almost unbreakable, HID are similar to all driving lights and are large and easily damaged if you hit something hard. Led lights also last longer than HID which will last longer than Halogen lamps.

So we have horses for courses, new technologies usually take over old designs and LED will be the ultimate winner for all uses but at present they are short distance flood lights and HID is medium to long distance lighting.

Color temperature is also relevant but that is a different topic.

                              regards

                              Ross

What is the Colour preferance of people on Prado Point?
Im running 30w 4300k in my low beam as I thought it was a closer colour to a normal head light colour.
Is there a better option than what im running as I just had a globe blow?
