  • Dual battery management Systems

    Dear All,

I'm a complete newby where 4wd accessories and rig building are concerned and would appreciate your comments and reassurances.

I have ordered an ARB Bull bar and an ARB Dual Battery system both to be installed by ARB. With the ARB dual battery system I'm getting an Optima D34 8012-021 2nd battery and also a Digital battery monitor, Auxilary Start function switch and a rocker switch with LED.

Today I was in my local Autobarn store buying a portable compressor. Their 4wd drive specialist pooh poohed my decision to go with ARB and said Piranha was heaps better.

Has anyone had problems with the ARB dual battery systems? Is the battery I'm getting okay? I'll be running a fridge off it and occassionally charging up the mobile. Does a UHF radio run off the dual battery as I'll be getting one of those before July too.

I would really appreciate your comments as it was actually you guys who helped me decide on a Prado in the first place.

    thanks
    Dulcie

    Re: Dual Battery System

Is this installed on a D4D ? I'm asking because the D4D has the alternator controlled by the engine management system .
This results in the aux batt not charging fully as the eng management winds the charge down . The answer is to use a DC to DC charger such as a Redarc which is fully adjustable to accommodate the different batt types .
My experience is that if you don't discharge the aux batt too deeply such as running a fridge overnight it'll be ok .
    Cheers

      Re: Dual Battery System

Theres plenty of info on this site about dual batteries systems, search for charging rate, ranox, redarc also
see the threads on dual batteries in the 150 modification area.

        Re: Dual Battery System

        Hi Ross,

Thanks for your reply, yes it is a D4D. What I think I'll do is, go back to ARB ask about that. Surely they wouldn't put out a kit if it didn't fully charge the aux battery? I reckon there'd be too many complaints.

I think I'll also get a quote from Pirahna and also check out how much the battery costs on its own.

Leigh I did do a search but obviously not a good one. I'll check out that folder now.

        Thanks guys for your help.

        cheers

          Re: Dual Battery System

I have an aux battery in the 150 with a Matson isolator. I run an Engel MT45 40lt fridge 24/7 set at 0C.

I'll admit I do lots of k's per week, (more than 1,000), and have yet to run the fridge for longer than 24hrs without driving the vehicle. So far I've had no problems with the aux battery running down and not operating the fridge at the desired temp. I have a thermometer mounted in the front so I can keep an eye on the temp.

From what I've read, one can expect the std alternator to charge the 2nd battery if the vehicle is driven long enough often enough to allow the alternator to charge the starting battery and then the aux battery.

As I said, this is based on what I've read and my seat of the pants experience.

Re: ARB Dual Battery System for diesels

            Hi Dulcie,

As written eventually the ARB isolator will charge your battery
but it will take a long time. If you wish to speed up the charging
I market a Voltage Booster on Ebay that addresses this issue, again
the Ranox and Redarc chargers are also an alternative if you are
            using dis-similar batteries.

            Cheers

              Dual battery management Systems

              Hi everyone,

Now that accesories are starting to become available Im looking to find everything that I want/ need to kit out the pardo. Not being electrically mind Im a bit unsure about which dual battery system will be the right one and most value for money.

Looking to need it for winching, running 2 fridges plus cooler, charging 12 volt accessories, cameras, laptops etc, charging the battery in the camper trailer, running the usual array of 12 volt camping accessories.
I have also been given some solar panels and gear to use them for charging though I havnt tried setting this up yet.

I am tossing up between the following

Red Arc Battery management System http://redarc.com.au/products-and-se...agement-system

              - Has good looking monitoring system able to check all sorts of different levels and performance on the batterys.
              - Very expensive about $1000 i think
              - Rated feature packed and very well in 4wd action battery management system comparison

              Red Arc Start Smart http://redarc.com.au/products-and-se...tery-isolators
              - Cheap about $160
              - Simple unit
              - Would have to connect it to a battery level monitor to keep a track of levels
              - Rated best battery isolator in the 4wd action isolator comparison

Piranha Dual battery Management system http://piranhaoffroad.com.au/index.p...d04bd255c8ecd2

              - Rated most recommended in the 4wd action battery management system comparison
              - Mid range price about $400-$50
              - Would also need to connect a battery monitor to keep of levels

So just keen to hear from anyone running any of these units or past experinces using the units. Or if any one else has recently done some similair research into of these products what you went with and why.

              Cheers, Caleb

                Re: Dual battery management Systems

i run the Redarc SBI12 isolator. have done (the same isolator) for the last 3 trucks. over 5 years.

i've had no problems with it at all, easy to install and use. easy to join the batteries if you want to the kick the main battery up a notch temporarily.

the prado's do suffer low voltage from the alternator though, and i included the diode from ebay to increase the battery charging voltage output.

my set works fine, i've run the aux in the prado as well and charging the camper batteries from it - again, no problems.

and considering i've carried it from vehicle to vehicle, i'm certain i'm got my money out of it.

                  Re: Dual battery management Systems

I have the Redrac BMS 1215 fitted to my camper Trailer.. Running Solar etc...

                  Absolutly brilliant system...
I have written up a report here with photos ..

                  http://www.campertrailers.org/smart_start.htm

I also have the BC-DC 1220 fitted to my prado..
The DC-DC charging is great. it means you will get you aux battery charged to 100% not 70% when using a "solonoid type system"

you can read about it here..

                    Re: Dual battery management Systems

One other thing I was wondering was if I was running the BMS 1215 setup in the car, would it tell me the level of charge in the camper trailer battery as well or would it just charge it?? Also as you would have the camper trailer battery setup via an anderson plug would its then be always charging or would it work like once the main is charged then the car second battery is charged then the camper one would begin charging?

Re: ARB Dual Battery System for diesels

                      Thanks Everyone for your replies,

I've had a Piranha system installed and to tell the truth it was because of the way they present their system.

They have it set up as a wall display, without the batteries of course, but they took me through the way it works, asked me what I wanted from a dual battery system and explained the different isolator systems they use and what would suit my requirements. I was able to ask a heap of dumb questions but Brian patiently went over everything. They also installed the Anderson plugs etc for me as well. Suffice to say it will be put to the test this June when I head off into the Flinders Ranges and am towing a camper trailer.

Now I've just got to get some towing tips..!

                      thanks again
