  • New Prado Bullbar advice

    Hi all,

Just after some advice and opinions on bullbars. I have a Dec 2018 Prado GXL Graphite colour and am looking at fitting a bull bar.
The main reason for the bullbar is the improved approach angle, as the couple of times it has been offroad so far the bumper has scraped a bit.
I wont be doing too much outback driving particularly at night so wildlife protection inst too much of a concern but is good to have.
So far i have had a look at a few and have narrowed it down in the following order of preference with some pros and cons:

    1 - TJM Outback Bullbar
    - From photos i prefer the look of this bar the most
    - Includes recovery points
    - Bottom bumper section looks chunkier (for the lack of a better word) than others which may compromise the approach angle (Hard to tell from photos)
    - Priced at $2900 fitted + colour coding (undecided to colour code or not)

    2 - Ironman Premium Bullbar
    - Good looking bar on photos
    - Cheap compared to others
    - Quality? Looking at the demos in store i cant see any issues
    - Priced at $2120 fitted + colour coding (undecided to colour code or not)

3 - ARB Summit Sahara Bar
    - Tidy look without the extra barwork on top
    - More expensive than any other bullbar
    - Less protection than a bullbar (But not too concerned about that)
    - Priced at $3150 fitted + Colour coding (undecided to colour code or not)

4 - Ironman Proguard with Single Loop
    - Similar to the ARB Summit sahara bar for less
    - Not sure how it looks on the prado, no photos
    - Priced at $2070 Fitted + Colour Coding (undecided to colour code or not)

    5 - ARB Summit Bullbar
    - Seems to be the most common bar
    - Looks good, but prefer the look of others ie the TJM bar
    - Most expensive than others
    - Priced at $3050 Fitted + Colour Coding (undecided to colour code or not)

That's what I've come up with so far, all the prices are RRP, once i decide i'm sure i'l be able to negotiate a better deal.
As you can see i am also undecided on the color coding, i and the missus (more the missus) dont want the bar to stand out too much, but i think the black bar on the graphite body blends well and doesn't stand out too much as the car is pretty dark. from what ive been told the powder coated finish is tougher and doesn't scratch as easy as a colour coded finish and you save $300 - $400 for colourcoding

Any feedback, information, photos would be great to help me make a decisions.

when you color code them they are painted over the black power coat
the black power coat will loose its shine and is hard to keep up later , i would color code it if it was mine, but my 2 cars are a white one (black bar) and the Dune (color matched) and both are well suited to each car
both have the ARB bar (they both came on them when purchased), but i do like the TJM

I recently bought a new 2018 Prado Kakadu Graphite grey, i got the TJM outback bar installed - black colour for $2800 so it looks like you got a good deal including color coding, im liking the design of the bar and havnt had much trouble with the approach angle.

i have also attached a photo

I have the same graphite grey vehicle as you and fitted an ARB Summit Bullbar.
Straight black powder coated, it looks good against graphite grey.

Hit a large roo at 100-110Km/hr a month later. No damage to the vehicle.

Some of the other bars look a little ungainly. The TJM one comes with recovery points I believe.

You will usually get the best price at any of the 4WD or Caravan & Camping shows - if you can wait.

I got the TJM bar mid 2018. Don't do a tonne of off-roading but had zero issues with it when I have.

                Thanks for the responses

See below some photos from various angles of the TJM bullbar on a prado at the local TJM store.
The TJM bar does seem like good value as it does include 2 recovery points. Note on the recovery points is they are rated to 8000kg as a pair used with a equaliser strap in a straight pull, where ARB rate theirs at 8000kg each and allow angled pulls. Looking at the bar in person it does seem to sit lower than a ARB bar, but doesnt stick out infront of the car as much, it is a lot closer to the car body.

I have had a quote for a OL bar $2460 fitted + Colour Coding but havnt seen them on the car yet.

RRP if you have some photos of yours from various angles handy that would be good see.

My ARB bar + recovery points plus other decorations. The clearance is fine. But my wheel carrier's tow hitch is my departure angle limiter, so I drive tracks without it.
And the best time to buy (any of the regular products) is at the 4WD shows.
If you are going to install a winch on the ARB bar you should also buy their hinged number plate bracket (it comes in a kit). With a bit of haggling you might get the kit thrown in for free at a show,

I believe they're new for the 2018 bar and have been painted yellow to stand out. I'll be leaning towards the TJM bar when I get one later in the year. Primarily due to the built in recovery points and the fact the bar sits a little closer to the car.
