  • Which roof rack?

    Hi All
    New to this site and looking for recommendations after just purchasing a 2015 Prado GXL.
    Have been looking a a few rack options and was thinking about a Rhino pioneer platform.
    Does anyone have and advise as not sure whether to mount on existing toyota rails or purchase rhino backbone and use instead of rails?
    Have read a few reviews that state terrible wind noise at between 60 - 100kms.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I fork out for one.

    The backbone system increases the allowed load limit I believe, but doesn't allow you to just swap back to rails if you want to. So if your decision is either backbone or rails you have to at least think about what you plan to pack on the roof.

    I'm also looking for a roof rack but haven't been able to decide either. I can't decide between the flat platform, the tradie rails or the full rails. I considered the new one from ARB ("base rack"?), but apparantly it doesn't have enough structural strength to mount the Rhino batwing without drilling new holes. The advantage of the ARB is that the rails can more easily be attached and removed as you wish.

    The wind noise I don't know much about, but the Rhino with full rails has a wind deflector that hopefully helps. Looks ugly though..

      I have the toyota/rhino roof bars. Never take them off. Mine is a GX so no roof rails to start with. NO wind noise. I put a roof basket onto them when needed [wind noise increases]. Any of the flat or basket racks can be so mounted. On my previous 120 I had the same basket attached to the thinner toyota bars on top of the roof rails. No issues on various desert crossings and outback roads. The advantage of removable baskets and trays is that you can enter virtually all underground car parks. Look at the total mounted height of whatever you choose and keep in mind the common 1.9 m clearance of a lot of car parks. Despite what the rack/basket sellers tell you it is Toyota that sets the maximum roof rack load. Go for the one which is eay to remove when not needed. ie one which sits on your existing bars.

        I have a Rhino flat rack with the Backbone system.
        Its great. However, the untold downside is that mounting a rooftop tent is on ordeal.
        The Backbone system blocks side access to the bolts of the roof top tent's aluminium mounting rails.
        My work around is to mount the aluminium rails of the tent onto the Rhino rack first, and very precisely.
        Then mount the tent onto its rails, it is a fiddle tho'.

            One point not mentioned is the overall height is lower with the backbone installation, if your leaving the platform on then overall height will be an issue for some carparks. Knowing the weight of a Rhino platform I doubt you will be removing & refitting it too often.
            My Prado is 1.98m high, I have Dobinson springs and run a rhino platform mounted on a backbone. There are several car parks with 2.0m clearance around Brisbane that I use.

              Installing the Rhino Backbone is hard yakka. You can forget about taking if off on a regular basis.

              I can get into underground car parks that have 2.05m+ clearance (I have a 50mm lift also). However, with maxtrax mounts and a sand-flag mount I park on the street.

                Please be aware of the Rhino rack when off-roading, different weight carrying capacity, check the Rhino web site for specifics.

                  The weight reduction advice when off roading applies to all roof racks as does the max roof load advised by Toyota.
                  Many chose to exceed that limit at their own calculated risk.

                    The Rola Titan with low mounts not the factory rails is what I'm considering for my 150 at the moment. Anyone tried that option?

                      For the record, we have fitted a Yakima LockNLoad platform which is probably as compromised as the Rhino, so only light and bulky stuff on the rack.

                        Late to the party with this conversation, but for future reference ...

                        I have the Rhino Pioneer Platform with backbone on a 2012 Altitude. I really like it. I purchased the shorter version (1928mm) which doesn't block the entire sunroof. I haven't noticed any extra wind noise compared to the roof bars I had previously.

                        The decision to go with the backbone was height. With an approx 50mm lift, I needed to drop some height to fit into the 2m car park at work. The backbone with platform was lower than the original rails with roof bars (and a lot lower than rails, bars AND platform). I just make sure not to leave ANYTHING on the roof including tie-down points when I go to the office.

                        The new series of platforms are adjustable (no drilling of holes needed anymore). But agree with previous posts about mounting roof-top tents. In addition to the challenge of getting your hands underneath the platform to reach bolts, many are designed for roof bars that run across the vehicle, rather than the platform rails that run front-to-back. But most people find a work around.
