  • FM radio reception

Hi All, I am very unimpressed with the FM radio reception in my GX and wonder if it is a consequence of the in-window antenna or the quality of the radio (or both?). I find the signal breaks up even around the city (Bris) in places where there are tall buildings (esp along Coro drive). But more frustrating, I find the range outside the city is quite poor and when travelling on the open road there are very long stretches without FM radio reception. BTW, I only listen to ABC Classic FM, in case anyone is interested! So the question I have is this. Can I solve this problem with an external antenna and if so, where can it be attached/inserted (I don’t have a bull bar) or do I need to replace the radio?
    Thanks

    Re: FM radio reception

Hi Flyman, I agree the reception is poor to say the least. I travelled from Hervey Bay to Rainbow Beach two weeks ago. In my Kluger I never lost reception from my normal SeaFM station, in the Prado I lost reception around Mt Mullen area.

Can't say I have specifically noticed poor or good quality radio reception, as I just switch to CD's when my signal drops out.
However, I have seen on here that a few of the boys installed a FM antenna on the bullbar and simply removed the original connection into the back of the radio and connected the new one.

Doesn't really help with any dissapointment - but may correct the issue. Sorry to say that I can't remember who has done this already!

Ours is poor also, both our 120 and our FG Falcon get much better reception.

I have gone down the cheap mp3 player path.

$70 800 songs and easy to use.

          Re: FM radio reception

Unfortunately one of the drawbacks of the poverty pack (I own a GX myself - so happy with it overall!) is that we only have a single FM antenna, whereas all other models have something akin to a differential antenna, utilising whichever gives the better signal at a given point in time.

Can't find the reference in the online PDF brochure, but I remember reading about it when I was comparing the models.

          Cheers!

            Hi Folks

Something else to think about do you have aftermarket window tint? If so and it is metallic you will seriuosly reduce the reception. There is a solution, 3M have a non metallic tint that doesn't effect reception at all. On our recent outback triup we didn't have any reception problems.

            Regards, Richard.

              Re: FM radio reception

Thought I would provide an update on the radio issue (and thanks to everyone who replied to the original post). Convinced that the problem of poor reception was due to the in-window aerial, I decided to install an external aerial on the bull bar. This resulted in a small improvement but reception is still poor, even around town in some places. BTW, I don't have tinting. I guess the next step is to replace the radio which I would gladly do if I knew it would improve the situation.
