  • Tailgate Dropped

G'Day all, I was wondering if anybody has come across the problem that is currently driving me nuts!! It appears as thought he rear door (tailgate) has dropped for some reason and is squeaking it's head off. I know have to drive with the radio cranking just to avoid hearing the squeak! Had it to Toyota this morning and the tech had no real idea and has suggested that the door may need to be replaced / inspected for cracking around the mounting points etc.
In the meantime I have sprayed the latch and guide with Tac2 and this is helping by lubricating the rubbers.
Has anybody else had any issues with this? I drive 220km a day and this is driving me crazy......

    Hi NewyD4D,

I had the same problem. Took the Workshop Foreman for a ride, he agreed there was an issue. Left it with them for the day. When I picked it up he said that the door was full of dust which they cleaned out - squeeking gone! However I have noticed that the squeeking is coming back after about 3,000km - and I haven't been on any gravel roads in the meantime...... So back to Toyota when it gets a little worse to make sure they acknowledge the problem.

Out of curiosity does your rear door "guide" show any wearing on the top part that is bolted to the body of the car?

I think there was a similar issue with some 120 if you wish to search for it,
something to do with the glue they use to put the door together failing
causing the door to sag requiring replacement of the door from memory.

        Cheers

My guide is heavily worn also, Toyota have looked at it and have decided to replace the gas strut that locks the door in the open position as they believe this is the cause of the rattles. It is on order, I am not overly convinced but will wait and see how it goes. Have found that the odd spray of Tac2 (Adhesive Lubricant) has stopped the squeak. In regards to the 120 issue (cracking of the seam around the rear door hinge area) this is so far not an issue for me.
Hopefully the part comes in soon as I am off to Fraser Island in just under 4 weeks, so would like it to be fixed before that road trip.

The 120's were only cracking on the first of them. When they bought out the 5 speed auto is when they modified the rear door......Cheers Steve

A way to check this for yourself rather than days of faultfinding is to remove it and do your daily commute. If the rattle is still there it will narrow down the search for the noise anyway.

I had a knock from mine, I adjusted the door and striker etc

I had squeaks, dry seals cause squeaks in many cars
Spray silcone spray round all the seals.
Not sure if that's your squeak, but cheap easy fix, to try....
