Sounds like good advise to me.

ive done many river crossings up to 800mm deep never had a problem . untill this week . 2 inches over the top rail of the bar ie 1.2 mtrs deep and a very slow crossing allowed water into the car . you could hear the water in the doors but that wasn't the problem it might be through the fire wall , i havn't had time to investigate . this car has never previously leaked water or dust for that matter , it does now.

hey guys , i beleive i have found the problem . as i experienced exactly the same problem as jonofoz , i am in the process of gutting my vehicle and will post pictures under a thread regarding water and dust ingress later today . it is a fault from manufacture and something that will affect many owners of 120s especially older ones like mine . its a simple problem and a simple fix relating to where the third row seats lock into the floor . under the plastic surrounds you will find 4 holes that have only a round piece of tape covering the holes . if the tape is missing from any of these holes that is your problem .

hmmm not really a factory problem , more a moronic owner problem . when installing a home made storage system ,make sure you plug the holes that are left by removing the plastic surrounds from the floor otherwise lots of water and dust gets in and you have to spend a week stripping out and cleaning the interior just like im doing . DOH!

Nolans brook - those who crossed will know...
Yes wet carpets and apparently a stuffed ECU (air bags)
1.13m Just measured my belly button where the water line was. Has anyone relocated the ECU box from being so low?
With the winch prepared we were out in about 2 minutes and had already crossed the deepest part so the floor pans only filled about 6 inches.
BTW. Speed was the killer on the crossing. The bow wave did it's job just perfect, but added a whole heap of pressure on the climb out. Too much pressure which just caused the wheels to dig right into the soft sand. Locals told me later that low first and a crawl is the way to get through. I wasnt keen to try again

Another way to get water in is through the 40mm holes in the floor under the front seats. When the vehicle was two months old I got it quite muddy in the high country and after washing it ie blasting underneath with water to dislodge the mud, I found very wet carpet inside. A stick had stood up under the drivers seat on the edge of the gromet, deformed the hole and left the gromet semi dislodged. This gromet in inserted from above on the production line. If you slide under the vehicle and press lightly on it, it will pop off against the carpet (I did this to the other one). Not keen on drilling the floor to fit metal cover plates, so I glued the gromets in place from underneath, now they are much more secure. The thought of having half a metre or more of water pressure on these sends shivers up my spine.

G'day , What would be the best setting as far as diff lock / low range when attempting to do a water crossing?
I've got a prado 150 which has a diff lock button but sad to say I've never used it..

Low Range, 2nd gear in a manual. You can put the center diff lock on it you want, no harm. Approach nice and slow, ease into the water, then speed up so you get a bow wave with the water WRAPPING around the front of the car, pref not over.

If the Oodnadatta track gets rain they close it, I doubt you have any water crossings. Maybe just a few mud holes. And yes leave the auto in drive.

Getting through is one problem, keeping your car going is another. I strongly recommend saturating your electricals with WD40 - particularly your alternator - immediately after emerging if you're lucky enough.

Also check that the breather in the fuel line between the tanks (located high up above/forward of the rear tank hasn't filled with gunk, othwerwise you can get an airlock which prevents you from accessing some of the fuel in the rear tank.

I have been warned against using WD40 on all electronic's and cables. Apparently it gets into the insulation and eventually causes issues. I have been told to use INOX. This is safe to use for electonics and cables, i have been using it on my outboards for many years and they look like new so it works well protecting from corrosion.
Not to expensive and can easily be bought though boating places.
