I find aftermarket steel side steps and a lift make great bump protection in car parks!
They will stop peoples sedan/normal sized car front doors hitting your car 90% of the time as most front door are straight up and down along the B pillar and the bottom of their door hits the step before it dents your door, the added benefit is that I would happily wear a new scratch on my side step in return for a dent in the bottom of someone else's door...
The down side is they do nothing to stop rear doors that are generally curved around the rear wheel.
I am more than happy to take my car out in the bush and scratch the shit out of it because it's my car, but I absolutely despise people in car parks and the dents/scratches they cause when they swing the door of their shitbox open with no respect for anyone else's property...

If I have to park in a large car park, where many other drivers are f*#@wits, I look for a spot on the end somewhere, where I can get some distance from other vehicles by a gutter, post or other object. Or walk a bit further.
The missus wants me to park nearest the door, so she does not have to walk too far, but then she will walk for hours looking for bargains !!!
