  • Plastic cover in spot where jack is.

Hi, in the compartment where the jack is stored against the side of the car, there is a plastic thing which looks like it should clip to the side somehow. Can anyone tell me what this is for and how I can remove it to give it a bit of a clean.

The body repair manual (m_bp_0118.pdf if you can find it somewhere) that I have does not give any indication. Underneath the car, does the plastic clip roughly in the centre of the floor (a cavity area) behind the left rear wheel hold that cover down (or does it hold a wiring loom?)? If you can find what that clip does, you could be on the trail. The plastic cover you refer to could be something to do with the rear bumper assembly but I'm guessing.

If it's any consolation, your car is a lot clearer than mine in that area. I bought my 2016 GX second hand and whoever installed the towbar and trailer wiring for the previous owner didn't put a grommet back properly. Even after cleaning it up, the whole area still has red dust in every corner and crevice.

I found a reference to it in a video on installing a brake controller. Here is a photo from the video. The grommet to feed the trailer cable outside is under that cover. The red dust is a nightmare and seems to be impossible to keep out.

Both my previous 120 and current 150 are very effective vacuum cleaners, sucking in vast amounts of fine red dust despite thorough searches and copious amounts of silicon. I suspect the flap for the flow through ventilation, a primitive system if ever there was one.

There are cabin pressure compensation vents underneath the vehicle/behind the rear wheels.
When driving on dirt roads the rear wheels throw up dust that makes its way up those vents. The only way to stop the dust is to ensure you always have the ventilation set to flow-through.
