Hello Everyone,
I am looking for some guidance on an ongoing issue with my 2018 150 GX. I live in Spain and the car was likely an ex highway patrol vehicle, so very well maintained for the high milage. I bought it from a Toyota dealer and it is in v good shape. Warranty does not cover brakes. The car was sold with BRAND new Toyota alloy wheels and tires.
I have owned the car 8 months and soon after buying I noticed a steel wheel wobble, and being a competent mechanical I replaced the discs and pads ( Bosch and quality OEM discs). the shake was gone. Everything was checked and the correct torque settings for bolts inc. wheel nuts was applied. 8k later the wobble returns and I then decided that maybe the discs/pads I had bought were not up to par, so I purchased genuine Toyota parts (discs and pads). While installing theses I noticed some of the caliper piston boots were split so I replaced all the 8 boots and clips with genuine parts. The pistons all extended when the pedal was pressed and I cleaned each piston so it was spotless. Brake fluid was bled from all 4 calipers and brakes have been great. All was good after this.
5K KMs later and a bad front end shake returns. On diagnosis it was a lower wishbone bushing that had gone, so I replaced all 4 and camber bolts with genuine parts. All Ok again after alignment but with v slight high speed wobble on high speed braking.
Over the past 5K miles the wobble is very noticeable at 80 plus KPH. The rear brakes have not been touched during this time and the discs are due to be changed due to a lip on them. Pads are good.
Any suggestions on what I may have here? Did I miss something? Could it be the rear brakes that are misleading me? would rear wrapped discs shake the front and not just the seat of your pants?
If a caliper was bad, surely if would have spotted that during replacement of the boots and cleaning of pistons? The car brakes in a straight line under hard braking.
Any guidance is much appreciated.
thank you!!
