  • 150 Handbrake

After about 10,000kms the handbrake had to be adjusted which was done by Toyota at the service. This was again needed every 10k.

I had it adjusted by Toyota prior to the Cape run (30k service) and after travelling from Brisbane to the Cape the handbrake would not hold the car. I stripped the rear wheels off the car and removed the brake drum/disk. Gave them a good bath and refitted the drum/disk. There is a small hole in the face where the wheel bolts on to adjust the handbrake on each drum/disk. This needed a lot of adjustment but it adjusted up OK.

There was a bit of scoring on the pads from the dust held inside the drum. Perhaps this may need to be watched when you are doing off road work and make sure we can give them a clean on long dirt runs. Might be a good idea to take some bolts so you can get the brake drum/disk to separate as mine were very tight.

    Nifty.

    Re: 150 Handbrake

The handbrake on my Prado VX didn't release on the left rear wheel last week. The car's only done 6200km!!! I previously owned a 90 series Prado which didn't give me any problems, even past 100,000 km. The new model doesn't inspire confidence. Anyways its much better than the Range Rover TD6 I have

Have just purchased on new manual GXL, and my handbrake is not holding the car firm enough as yet, in the manual (for those who read these) I noticed that you should get the dealer to bed the handbrake in, so that's what I'll be doing next month.
Also there is no sensor to let you know that "hey you've got your handbrake on silly". I would think that would be a good option, as many people at some time forget to release that handbrake.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the handbrake warning light the one with the exclaimation mark inside the triangle? Maybe it's a manual thing?

Yep, my handbrake will need adjustment at the 10k service too. If the car isn't in park, the handbrake won't hold on hills. This isn't great as it means the car is being held by the transmission.

Have it adjusted at the rear wheels not at the cable and your problem should be solved. I had a dealer try to tell me that the drum were too small to hold the car. The lazy buggers couldn't be bothered taking the wheels off to do the job. Took it to another dealer who adjusted at the rear and problem solved.

Is this adjustment at the wheels an easy fix at home?

There is certainly a warning that beeps away in an SX (SWB Auto), I get it all the time as my handbrake holds for no more than 1000km after each service...

                    Re: 150 Handbrake

Hi Fellas. When taking up the slack in the handbrake, Back off the cable adjustment a good way before adjusting the shoes. Only when the shoes are correctly adjusted should you then adjust the cable. Then take the vehicle for a run around the block and check the rear brake temperature to make sure you havent overtightened the shoes. I never rely fully on my 90's handbrake on a steep hill as you are never going to get a really flash handbrake with shoes that small anyway. Cheers.

Be careful to check the handbrake in low-range. So much torque you wont realize if you have left it on.

Guys, I know this thread is old but I have a few questions re the handbrake.

I am happy with the adjustment through the small hole in the drum, this physically lengthens the connector rod between the shoes and minimises the gap, in effect "tightening" the shoes. Cool.

I did a full rebuild on my old 90 series petrol with new cables, shoes, and full brake assemblies - all genuine. It work really well restoring the handbrake back to factory operation. At the time, comparing the original cable and the replacement cable, it was obvious the original cable was 4 inches longer then the replacement due to cable stretch. On the 90 series, To shorten the length of a stretched cable, there used to be a nut just below the handle itself to pull up the cable, effectively tightening up the "stretch" of the cable.

On my new 150 series GXL, I cannot see or find and adjustments on the cable itself. Unless I'm missing something, it appears the new cable does not have any adjustments in it and is now fixed in length. Is this correct?

From underneath, it looks like the cable divides into two cables, just rear of where it exits the floor. The cables then run symmetrically down the outboard side of the rig directly the the drums. No adjustments visible.

Anyone with parts diagram or info on the cable itself please explain how it works on the new 150 series prado. Is there an adjustment near the handle that i just cannot see.

Mine is a manual d4d. Regards Scott

Thanks Starbuck. That's exactly what I was after.

It appears you have to take a lot of the dash apart to remove the centre console..... fantastic!

I'll have a look in the morning.

                          Cheers

Question, has any one on this forum actually removed the centre console? It seems the above documents have you removing half of the dash to get access to the hand brake lever adjuster. I am interested to see if it there is another way possible or is this the only option?

                            Thanks in advance

                              Hi Guys and Gals
I think I've got an issue with my hand brake. Driving home this after noon noticed Prado didn't feel right. When I put it into the garage the passenger side wheel was really hot and the smell was bad. I think my hand brake has stuck on on the passenger side! Drivers side was OK. Any one else experience this before? any help appreciated. (will not drive until my mechanic has a look on Monday)
