If YES it could well be your handbrake. Did someone recently adjust it? Toyota 4WD handbrake systems with the drum in disc handbrake systems can easily be over tightened. If they are set slightly over tightened when cold the natural heat build up that occurs when driving can cause parts to expand which then creates more friction and heat build up in the brakes which then continues in a viscous heat build up /expansion cycle which could well explain the heat and smell from your wheel.
