I think I've got an issue with my hand brake. Driving home this after noon noticed Prado didn't feel right. When I put it into the garage the passenger side wheel was really hot and the smell was bad. I think my hand brake has stuck on on the passenger side! Drivers side was OK. Any one else experience this before? any help appreciated. (will not drive until my mechanic has a look on Monday)
    Dart,

I presume you mean passenger side rear wheel?

If YES it could well be your handbrake. Did someone recently adjust it? Toyota 4WD handbrake systems with the drum in disc handbrake systems can easily be over tightened. If they are set slightly over tightened when cold the natural heat build up that occurs when driving can cause parts to expand which then creates more friction and heat build up in the brakes which then continues in a viscous heat build up /expansion cycle which could well explain the heat and smell from your wheel.

    Thanks,

    Ken

      Thanks for the reply Ken.

Car was serviced over 3 months ago. I would assume a poorly adjusted system will immediately cause issues not 2000 km later.

I am more looking for people who have had a first had experience with this issue. Amazingly after being inspected no binding was found. Since being inspected I have driven the car an had no more issue, which is really concerning for me.

In my previous 4wd (100 series) I needed a hand brake adjustment every 10,00k. Then I realised that unlike the vehicle disk brakes, there should not be any reason to wear the handbrake shoes. I found I used to pull the handbrake on as I came to a stop so it was contantly getting some wear. My Prado has now done 55,000km and the handbrake has been adjusted once. I put the brake on last thing before getting out so the only dragging on the brake is deliberatly when 4w driving. If your handbrake constantly needs adjusting, consider its purpose and look at how you are using it.

Sounds like a typical Toyota handbrake. Our 100 series (actually and my 80 series and 60 series) all had crappy handbrakes that after about 10,000km completly lost all usefulness...

I know the adjusting procedure was a PITA.

          Good luck

We just had our 30K service and at the pre-service test drive the mechanic noted that the handbrake was very loose.
Apparent 5 clicks is good, 10 is not (which is what ours was). Now when the brake is applied it only comes up half of what it was doing since the car was new. Oh and they didn't try to charge for the adjustment.

Well I have had five services done on my 150 series, four of which has been returned to the service agent for re-work on the handbrake, two of which has left my vehicle on the side of the road first trip after servicing due to cooked brake/s, not happy Jan!

If anybody has the diagrams to remove the trim & console between the two front seats, can you please post them in this thread.

I need access to adjust the handbrake cable and being my first time removing trim, really do not want to break any clips or plastic.
                Thanks
