Had my petrol 150 serviced yesterday and asked that question. Was told there is not any specific service interval for the fluid, however, it is inspected at the services and will be replaced if needed. I informed the service bloke that I tow a van, he said not to worry, just keep an eye on the A/T warning light. He also said the earlier 150 T/D's were having the problem, not the petrols, and it should be fixed by now.

Here's a poor photo of my install.

Search the 150s Drive Train Auto threads and you will find more photos and the fill procedure.

Hi all, had an issue with the Auto trans high temp warning light come on while towing, contacted Toyota and had the flash update, trans changes gears better, also fitted a B & M after market Trans cooler, its fitted on the return line, after the radiator. The cooler has its own thermal switch to activate the fan when the fluid temperature reaches 175 degrees F/79.44° Celsius. So fare I have never had the fan running. Cooler trans temp longer the life...sorry no photos, got the cooler through local parts supplier. Approx $500.00 fitted it myself...

One bit of advice for the radiator and coolers, having done a lot of country driving I always fit a set of fly creen behind the grill to catch assorted bugs. Easy to clean and makes for a long problem free radiator life.

Just did a 800km round trip with my car trailer on the 150 for the first time, with the trailer empty trans temp sat 85 cruising and spiked to 95 on acceleration. Once I loaded the trailer total load of 2.4 t HOLY SH#T ! Trans temp on accel went to over 100 and spiked to 118 when taking off from the lights but stabilised at 88 cruising at 105 kmph.
My thinking is the trans temp sensor is located in the wrong position, sensing convertor outlet temp instead of overall system temp.
Tran light never came on. Does anyone know at what temp it comes on?

I too was really keen on the B&M cooler with fan but think the fan will run too often and restrict air flow at high speeds.

                    My thoughts exactly.

Apparently light comes on at 110.

I had exactly the same results towing 2.5t with a huge amount of wind resistance.

                      Wooley ,

I saw the scangauge go up to 121 and no sign of the a/t light. I thinking I might just give it hell while its in warranty and see what happens.........

With the cab of a landcruiser sitting above the roof of the prado, up a 10% gradient and a trailer weight of about 10kg over towing capacity I hit 135... I take the reading with a grain of salt as my a/t fluid still looks and smells new.

I'm driving at the moment an it's at 121 and as soon as I was up hill it went back to 100 and is continuing to drop.

I pulled over to write this...

How do you check the a/t fluid. There doesn't appear to be any easy way to get a sample to look at.

In the bottom of the pan there is 2 plugs , 1 to drain and 1 has a tube inside to get the level right.
Take the level plug out and it will dribble alittle, note do this when it is cold.

Wooley, What are your thoughts on the oil cooler with fan?

How do you top up the trans fluid once you have fitted the cooler?

OK now I have had another look under the pan, I see the two plugs - 1 is a hex head and the other is round with an allen key socket.

I presume the hex head plug would be the overflow - is that right? Don't want to accidentally drain the box.
