I had the clunk as well and I read the forums and put mine over a pit and put some grease in and that made a lot of difference no more clunk but I must admit I have been waiting for the return of it Cheers Foxy

Did they replace the shaft or regrease it?

Am I correct in assuming that this is a D4D thing because my 150 v6 certainly doesn't do it and as some of the PPer's will tell you it gets driven like it's stolen (that's by the wife by the way).

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

Regreased. I have heard that if they apply to much as Wolley suggests it can make the problem worse.

Is this regreasing the slip joint? Or pulling apart the tailshaft and packing with grease? I've been told that putting too much grease into the slip joint will blow the seals.

I have no idea Andrew. Just know that I personally have never found too much lubrication to be a problem, and even with it is inevitable things will blow.

LOL love the reply............Getting back to the original lubrication required when I worked for Toyota the workshop use to use like a copper coloured stuff on the splines, they would be pulled apart, the grease cleaned up off them, then coated in this copper type spray then let dry the regreased and put back in, now this was back in 88 to 92 which for memory would have been the 80 series cruiser so maybe its been happening since then, (not sure I have the right vehicle, could have been 4 runner even, cant remember) but anyway they use to use that and it fixed the problem, they said that with this stuff it stops the splines binding up. I will see if I can find out the name of the stuff off my mate, he was there for 18 years............. Regards Steve

I had mine 'fixed' at 15k, and again at 20k. Not a sound or a squeak or a clunk, and I've just clocked 90k.
Apparently there were air pockets in the grease, the first time they left a few behind, but nothing since.

I took my car in for its 20k service this morning, told the service manager that there was a thud when i came to a stop, i said commonly know as "tailshaft clunk" he nodded in agreement as he knew exactly what i was talking about and said it would take a little bit longer to do the service.... no probs . Picked the car up this afternoon and he's ordered me a new tailshaft to be fitted on the same day my mudflaps and bumper gets done.

Mine only started happening in the past 2-3000k and it was only every so often, probably 1 in 10 stops.... maybe more.

                          Pretty happy with the outcome.

Yes, had that problem with the 80 series, but the pricks denied any problem when I complained at every service until the warranty ran out, then wanted to charge me to have it fixed. It was eventually replaced out of warranty but no charge to me, as Toyota Australia sent the National Warranty Manager to NSW to sort out the various problems about non complience with warranty repairs by Toyota NSW, and my wife taught his children at her school. After a short conversation with his wife, Toyota NSW wrote to me and offered to replace the shaft when it suited me. F@#*ing pricks.

I had the same with all 3 100 series I've had. Dealer just does it at every service without asking. Haven't experienced it on the 150 yet though.

Well my dealer renigged on ordering my new shaft....the usual guy I dealt with in service left just before Christmas......oh well the shaft is alright at present anyway as I think they wacked more grease on at the last service (a bit to much as usual).
