just dropped mine off this morning for its 40K service and raised the issue of the dreaded clunk. It will be interesting to see how they initially address it. I'll report back.

My started clunking after about 20k, spoke to service department and was told to let them know at the 30k service. Just had service and was told tailshaft had been greased and shouldn't have a problem now, all good so far.

Standard answer and treatment Roy, I'll be very surprised if it does not return. Push for a new shaft if it does.
I have a 05 grande V6 done 155,500ks with a tail shaft clunk it is in today getting a full dash fitted and the tail shaft replaced (under warrenty as both of these issues are a Toyota factory fault). My mate with an 05 VX V6 done 80,000ks he has had the same dealer say he has replaced the tail shaft, but they are only greased it up, this fixes the problem for about 30 days then he has it back at Toyota with the same clunk noise. Because the dealers don't like having to do this kind of warranty work they will try and get out of it anyway they can

I had my 150 Shorty in for it's 20,000k service yesterday. I had told them about the "clunk" when I booked the service. When I arrived yesterday I was told that they were aware of the problem however, a replacement tailshaft was not being made for the short wheelbase 150's. They have been advised to grease the shaft at every service and that they have been given a specific procedure to follow when doing this.
Has anyone else with a shorty had this "clunk" problem and if so, what has the dealer told you?
Regards
Bassett

Now living the Dream !!
I've just recently purchased a 90 series auto V6 grande with 246000km and I have a clunk from some sort of driveline slack. It occurs when going from nuetral to drive and when coasting then getting back on the throttle. Is this the same clunk that others are experiencing from the tail shaft slip yoke spline? I don't experience any clunk after stopping, only when torque is applied and the slack is taken up. My front tail shaft does not appear to have slack in the slip yoke but it does rotate somewhat more than the rear making me believe there is slack further down the line. My mechanic (not a dealership but a trusted mechanic) believes it is the CV splines and hub splines. I'm contemplating replacing both CV's and hub splines. Is there a front driveshaft I should be enquiring about at Toyota spare parts considering it's well out of warranty?
No this sounds like something else. Have you read through the drive train area of the 90 series section of the forum here http://www.pradopoint.com/forumdispl...in-(90-Series) as this thead relates to the 150 series?
I've looked through the 90 section and searched the whole forum. Doesn't help that the stupid search function settings cannot search2 character words like CV
Dropped mine off for 10,000K service this morning with tailshaft spline grabbing pretty badly. Thought I would have to jump through the hoops of greasing the shaft, bringing it back a number of times etc as others have had to.
Picked it up this afternoon, new tailshaft fitted, smooooooth like it used to be. Fantastic service from Sci-fleet Taringa.
Hi Basset, Mate I too have the SX shortie and I too have the clunk but what I have been doing is, when I do the 5K oil and filter I also add some high temp grease to both the front and rear shafts and it has kept the dreaded clunk at bay BUT that is only a short term fix not a cure . Sounds as though Toyota are not making the shortie shafts to replace the duds so I guess I'll have to continue with the grease. Cheers Foxy
Just picked up my 2010 GXL Petrol today with 60k on the clock and it is really immaculate and a credit to the previous owner. And wow, doesn't that Prado Clunk get old really fast. It has just had the 60k service so they obviously didn't do the whole grease thing. I will be sorting that out tomorrow. I didn't really notice it when I test drove it, but now I own it, I wait for it every time I stop. It sometimes doesn't do it when I stop, but as soon as I take off, there it goes, the clunk. My wife will give me some if it doesn't get fixed. Also found it really has a lot of rear end clunk/bangs and the like in the body. I am coming from a KX-S Kluger which is a revised (cheaper RX350 Lexus) so there will be a time for adjustment. But I love the car, it just has something about it. Especially the fact that it can tow my bike trailer on dirt up a hill. Looking forward to lots of trips away in the car and being a member of this great forum.
