Well I'm really hearing a clunk now, I think a mechanic has left something on top of one of the bash plates during my last service on Friday. It sounds like a can rolling along and then going "clunk" against something solid, happens when pulling to a stop or braking a bit hard. I can't find anything loose inside the cabin, has to be underneath. I hope they aren't trying to have a laugh at my expense!

Well it sounds just like the cans rolling out of the Coke machine at work, they make a pretty loud thud when they hit the chute. I'll try and have a look in the morning when I have some daylight. Hubby had noticed it too but didn't say anything, else I would have investigated sooner.Last edited by fido666; 26-02-2013, 11:29 PM.

Can anyone tell us if the replacement tail shafts have a different spline design?
Any pictures etc?
Our Prado has done 7000 kays and I am increasingly noticing that there is a clunk happening once you get moving the first few metres after stopping.
If there is a new spline design it's very poor that they are not fitting the new tailshaft to new cars - ours is a december 2012 model, and after 7000 kays it clunks more than my 14 year old nissan patrol.
Cheers

For the first proablly 0-9000 kms i was having a tail shaft shudder every now and then. First time it happened i actually through the car behind had hit me..thats how noticeable it was.
I had the 10,000 km service and mentioned it, however since that it has not occured once (fingers crossed).
If it does its going straight back.
Pretty annoying considering how much they are to purchase.2012 Toyota Prado GXL

Within two weeks of my last service, at which time my tail shaft was greased, it started clunking again and quickly got worse than it had been before.
Spoke to Service Manager last week and he is ordering a replacement.
Hopefully it arrives soon and fixes the problemIf the wind don't blow, the world don't suck and we all fall off

I think I found the source of my mystery clunk I mentioned a few posts back. It might sound weird but my street directory was sliding around under the passenger seat and hitting the DVD unit for my nav system. I tried a few test slides with the book and was able to reproduce the noise. It's a bit embarrassing, it really did make a loud metallic clunk when it slid forward and hit the DVD reader and it sounded like it was coming from underneath the car when I was driving.
Now to see if the actual tailshaft clunk comes back, that's not such an easy fix!

I'm booked in for its first big service tomorrow - 10k. I've had the dreaded clunk since approx 7k.
I have some light reading ahead of me in this thread to refresh my game plan.
Will let you know how it goes...Last edited by jayden82; 28-03-2013, 03:05 PM.2012 150 | GXL | D4D | Auto | Graphite | TJM T13 | X-Ray 220 HID | Genuine Towbar | Engel 40L
