Tailshaft Clunk

Pretty sure my tail shaft has started clunking as we'll, although it only happens intermittently at the moment. It was in for a service about 1500kms ago, so I expect (hope) it has been greased recently.
Were you guys who have had the tail shaft replaced experiencing the clunk every time you come to a stop, or should I be getting it sorted before it gets worse?

Rwo,
Not every time in my case, but very annoying nonetheless. Mine maybe did it a few times a day just commuting to and from work (only about half an hour total driving time), but it was when it did it the first stop after the 10,000km service where they had just greased it to stop the problem that really got my goat! I'd push to get it done sooner rather than later.

Can't believe people still having to fight Toyota to get a bloody new tailshaft !!! When they know it's an issue. Should be no questions when some one complains about it, ""yes sir it's a known problem will order you a new one and we will call you when it's in"". It's been happening since 1996 with the first Prado and since the 80 series cruisers, bloody 18 years bout time you gave in Toyota and stop treating people like idiots and back up your loyal customers. Just like the injector seal issues. I know when I update the wife's car in the next coupe of months it's not going to be a Toyota.....cheers SteveFace lift 150 Prado V6 auto. No mods yet

Yeah,
New tail shaft installed Friday. So happy. 30k service. I told them that I would not send car for a service until parts ordered and do both tasks on the same day. After a couple of weeks it was booked in and done. Thank for the advise everyone.

So i had my 60 service last week and reported the tailshaft clunk. Upon picking it up, they advised me that the front shaft has been replaced previously and they greased the current one as it was dry. However during the process of purging and greasing the rear shaft, they couldn't undo the grease nipple, in order to purge the old grease (apparently this is part of the process). Then, the service manager asked where i bought the car from and said that as they couldn't undo the rear grease nipple, i should take it back to where i purchased from and get them to repair it, as they didnt want to break the nipple and have to replace the entire shaft. WTF!!
I was that stunned by the response, that i left, complete with the receipt which had written about the nipple issue! It will be the last time the Kak goes to Southside Toyota, thats for sure. Can anyone recommend a decent dealer on Brisbane southside/Gold coast?
cheers

Hi Geoff,
Is there a good Toyota dealer?
I'm getting the 30K done on my Prado tomorrow and it makes me feel sick in the stomach at the thought of leaving it with them. One of the downsides of upgrading my Prado last year.
I don't like getting under cars these days, but as soon as it is out of warranty, I'll be doing the work again myself. At least I know that the work I have paid for has been done, with no damage left behind.

Not being able to remove the grease nipple is bullsh*t, worst case senario they break the nipple off, drill the centre of the nipple, keep going to oversize it, tap new oversize hole and put oversized grease nipple in. Not an issue at all, I did it just the other day on a customers T/D 100 series to fix the same tailshaft clunk. Just remember after drilling the tail shaft has to be completely disassembled and cleaned to remove any metal shavings (swarf).[LEFT]Silver 150 Facelift

that was my thought and even spray some penetrene onto it and rotate upright and leave for an hour or so, but then had a sensible thought, OEM mechanics can only figure out how to plug into the OBD port and change the pollen filter, any real mechanical work is akin to nuclear physics for them!
I will be taking the car back to the dealer that it was purchased new from, complete with the invoice and BS excuse for them to address. The clunk is still there, albeit reduced.
cheers

OK so mine has been doing this for ages and it is annoying now. I got under on the weekend after reading this to see how the grease was and there was bloody grease everywhere around where the spline goes in on the rear tail shaft. All over the floor and exhaust and a real mess.
Is this replacement shaft thing a known issue and I just ring up local Toyota Dealer to get it replaced or is it something I need to replace myself?
Bugger I made a mistake as mine is a 120 and didn't realise I was in the 150 section. Sorry guys can you delete.

A positive story for toyota at Waitara, nsw. I have had my car serviced at another centre for the last 4 services. Each time I mentioned the clunk and they confirmed known problem but would only grease. I was passing waitara and thought I would drop it in for the 50k service. One mention of the clunk and the service guy said he would have spare tailshaft tomorrow - I didn't even need to ask for it to be replaced and he had not even seen the previous notes. As promised part arrived and now all installed. It seems it is the dealers NOT toyota HO who determine of they are going to do it.Jaysea

Our shaft was replaced at the 40000 service. Started clunking within 10000 km and still is today. Now has 215000.
Toyota cannot build a shaft that doesn't go clunk.
