  • Transmission oil leak - covered under warranty?

I have a 2011 Pradio diesel with automatic transmission. It's 12 months old and has done around 25,000 Kms.

I've just noticed an oil leak which looks like it's coming from the seal between the transfer case and the transmission. It's only enough to leave around 5 or 6 drops of oil on the garage overnight.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, is it covered under warranty?

    Regards
    Martin

If it is leaking it will definitely be covered.

I'd also take it back to toyo sooner than later.

Similar to engine oil. A light brown colour.

What does it smell like? Trans fluid should be red; unless it's been overheated.

It doesn't smell burnt. Does the transfer case and the transmission share common fluid?

It's probably the transfer case output shaft seal. My rear seal was replaced under warrantee. I've read of a few vehicles with the same problem.

Tranny fluid shouldn't be brown at 25000km. I reckon its transfer case as stated above.

Turns out this was a leaking seal between the transfer case and the automatic transmission. A very slow leak of transfer case fluid.

The seal was replaced under warranty by my dealer. They mentioned that this was the first time they'd had to replace this type of seal on a 150 series Prado.

Geez that use to happen with the old LN106 89 model hilux I had, seal between transfer case and manual gear box would go, best fix was to put a fixed pipe between the two so they would balance out, was actually not a bad fix and solved the issue of the seal ever going again. Think they would have fixed tha after all these years lol. Hopefully yours is just a one off and not going to become an issue with others. Only thing I hate when they say things like that "" first time they'd had to replace this type of seal on a 150 series Prado"" I wonder to myself, is mine a lemon.. Had this on a couple of cars but must admit have never had another issue with the vehicle. Probably just some thing that was 99% not 100%. My Vitara did a similiar thing, the rear main seal chewed out at 13k, literally had oil pissing out from engine. Had to call into a garage twice and both times get a 4L of oil and keep topping it up till I got home. Was ddone under warranty, service bloke said to me, "never had a vitara do that before" thought great Ive got a lemon but after that besides been two small and not enough ground clearance that little buggar did alot of off roading with no further issues. Glad the problems fixed, you can rest easy now lol.......Cheers steve
