  • Manual Lock Up Switch for Torque Converter On Automatic Transmission???

    Hi everyone,

I was up at Landcruiser Mountain Park a few weekends ago and was doing a bit of steep downhill work. I have the D4D in Automatic. I Found that being in Low Range and 1st Gear with downhill assist on, the engine still got a rev up and ran away a bit to quick for my liking. Has anyone put a switch in to lock up the torque converter. If so did you use a kit for this and what has your experience been? Is this an expensive modification to make and is there any risk of damage to the Auto Transmission?

For lock up switch to work in first I believe you need one of the nomad valve bodies which are about $1000?

Shouldn't cause any issues as long as you remember to turn it off when coming to a stop.

Wooley is on the money, the lockup switch won't work in 1st low unless you change the valve body. It's on my wish list but a fair few $$ for the job.

There is a lot of discussion on this in the 120 section if you do a search.

Bugger the DAC off and use left foot braking

I don't use the DAC but don't have any prob's going down steep stuff with a C/T that has no brakes . I thought that in lo range and 1st gear the converter was locked as I don't get that runaway feeling at all .

If the engine "got a rev up" I suspect that means the torque converter is fairly locked up. If the torque converter wasn't at least partially locked up then the engine rev wouldn't rise much above idle and you would just rely on the DAC (or left foot brake:-). Perhaps you hill was just very steep:-)

We did a high country trip a few months ago, in second gear low range it felt like it wanted to "roll away". In fact sometimes when it was going down hill too fast, a touch of accelerator would lift the revs, engage the torque converter and actually slow the car down. It takes some confidence to accelerate when you need to slow down. I did NOT notice this at all in first gear low range, it always felt totally locked up. Came back down the Blue Rage Track, first gear low range no brakes required but the revs did get up to about 3500 (it is steep). Other tracks needed some left foot braking to get the speed down to a crawl over rocks etc. I started out using left foot on the brakes, right foot on the accelerator to keep the torque converter locked, a few days into the trip I found this wasn't needed in first gear. This techniques was still very much required in second gear.

I got sick of the noises that the DAC made, and at times it is too slow and on rocky bits way to fast.

Does Wholesale Automatics have a manual lock kit for the Prado, they seem to offer them for a number of vehicles??
