  • What diff, transfer and manual gearbox oil are you using? (KDJ150)

Hi, My Prado is up for its 80,000klm service and part of that is to change out the diff oils. I always do my own servicing but I am having trouble finding the 'right' oils in my area. Read any lubrication product guides or online etc and the story seems to be the same: Refer to dealer.....

So I went to the dealer, not only did they think the oils were anything special, they didn't have any in stock!!

I would prefer to buy my oil from Supercheap/Repco anyway as I get a small discount at either and I know what I'm getting.

So, from the book I have concluded the following:

The gearbox and transfer require SAE 75W. Penrite Pro Gear 75W-85 (GL-4) seems to fit the bill there.
The diffs require 75W-85. Penrite Pro Gear 75W-90 seems to be the closest in an LSD/GL-5 tyre of oil. (Could I also use this in the gearbox and transfer?)

Would these be OK? Could I use the Pro Gear 75W-90 for all the drive train? It's causing me to think more than I need to!

    Cheers Brad.

depends if I feel like buying more oil from repco or supercheap, stock up when its on special.
Castrol multitrax or nulon smooth shift or repco/penrite lsd90 always g70 added to all of them.

If you want the best Castrol syntrax is super duper, take your gold card for it.

Thanks guys. Surprised this hasn't been covered here specifically for the 150 ;-)

I am left wondering why the Toyota users manual is suggesting a lighter oil in the 150 than the 120 Prado, when essentially they have the same running gear. (I cross referenced the part numbers for the front diff, gearbox/transfer and rear diff on ToyoDIY.com between the 120 and 150 and they are almost identical)

So would it be safe to assume that I can use Penrite Pro Gear 75W-90 which is GL-5 and suitable for LSD in the lot? I like Penrite and always have but have used Castrol and Nulon in the past as well when I couldn't get Penrite and all was good.

      Cheers Brad.

I recon Toyota have dropped the oil viscosity specs for fuel economy. Check your manual to confirm GL4 oil is ok in the transfer case. Usually transfer cases call for GL5/MT-1. You have to watch out with penrite oils. The were selling LSD90 oil for a long time as a 90W LSD oil. It was in fact an 80w90 which may have caused problems in some diffs (nissans).

Thanks for the reply. The users manual simply says:
SAE 75W for the gearbox and transfer.
          75W-85 GL-5 for the diffs.

          Cheers Brad.

            Hi Roo

I use Penrite oils & my 150 is due for the 24 month service, I only have 20,000km on the truck but the maintenance manual requires front & rear diff oil to be changed. The owners manual states Genuine Toyota Diff Oil - LT 75W-85 GL-5 or equivalent.
All the lube guides on the web including Penrite state -

            Differential
            Service Refill Capacity: 2.1-2.7 Litres.
            See notes 650, 15 below.
            Refer Dealer

None of the lube guides recommend a Diff Oil. Would you recommend the following Penrite oil for the Diffs (Front & Rear)

            TRANS GEAR 75W-90 Semi Syn.
            Viscosity: 75W-90
            Base Oil:
            •Semi Synthetic
            Used in the following applications:
            •Manual Gearboxes
            •Transfer Cases
            •Transaxles

One more question - How do I know if I have a LSD the owners manual is not clear?

            Regards
