  • lockers over traction control

    Hi,

I am just about to commit to a new prado as an update for the 120 series that we have had. Is there any benefit to getting a locker on a GXL or will it interfere with the traction control?

It wont interfere, but I'd wait until you try it without. The traction control in the new 150's works extremely well (better then 120 if you have it) I was trying to find a video of a member on here who has a 150 with just traction control (cant find it) and he did just as good as the bigger locked 4wd's eg patrol/cruiser. If you havn't had traction before you will be surprised where it will get you.....Yes lockers will always be an added benefit but depends on how hard you intend going....Cheers Steve

      Absolutely correct & well answered.

In a 150 you shouldn't need lockers, but on really extreme stuff there might be a slight advantage.
I wouldn't bother. Save your $$$. Less mods can help keep it more reliable.

but the bogan in me really wants to have a locker - never had one before.

i have seen a few you tube clips demonstrating the crawl control debogging vehicles, and i was a bit concerned that the locker might interfere with this pretty cool piece of kit

I will be fitting lockers to my 120. One reason is to get around the soft rear diff. The other is to give the vehicle the extra capability. Some might consider it over kill, but if it means the difference between a difficult situation and an easy enjoyable day, I will take option two for a couple of thousand dollars.

Again in my opinion at the end of the day it depends on how hard you want to go. I had traction in the old 95 grande, and even though its not as good as lockers it certainly got me where I wanted to go. If you have a spare 2k and think you need it then go for it. At the end of the day its your decision on wether you want to add one. I am going to get one in my 120 (was going to do it ages ago but other expenses came first (eg reno's). If I personally had traction control in my 120 I wouldnt be getting a locker but thats me. When I get one it will be an Elocker. Cheers Steve

Pretty sure the GXL does not have the crawl control feature even in the facelift models, it only comes in the Kakadu model.

Other manufacturers who provide both traction control and most often a rear diff lockers will usually disable the traction control to the rear when the locker is enabled (there is no value in both running) but leave the front under traction control

An aftermarket locker probably has no integration between the TC and locker function but locker should win out as less wheel spin etc should mean TC doesn't engage

I'm not in a hurry to have them fitted. (I will also be going with e-lockers) Theres lots of other setting up to do first. I'm planning on a trip to Fraser in February and I doubt I will have lockers fitted by then.

I will be do The Cape in a year or so. The way I see it, if the lockers make a difficult situation easy/easier, they will have paid for themselves.

Better to have and not need...etc...

Agree agree agree! the traction control on mine is epic! there is a slight pause whilst the system kicks in and then the prado pulls itself up anything! I even questioned the guy at the eaton stand at a show recently and he had to concede that newer systems were pretty good and lockers soon will be for extreme stuff only.
