Automatic engine braking 2.8 Diesel Auto can it be disabled?

Hi Guys,

Bought a VX diesel auto 3 weeks ago and just got it back from the dealer for the 1 month service and it seems that the auto engine brake has been disabled.

Not sure if I'm doing it wrong but the truck does not seem drop down gears automatically when costing down a hill and stabbing the brakes lightly.

I remember mentioning to the service guys about the the fuel consumption and that It could be better. They said that the engine has only 1000ks and that it should improve with more kilometers.

Is this something that the technicans may have disabled to save fuel?

The 5-Speed does, even with cruise on it will downshift. But the hill has to be steep enough. Sometimes it does it, sometimes not.

In the 120 auto engine braking is only available by downshifting to 4 or 3. If you're in D and gliding downhill there will be no engine braking. As vehicle speed reduces and you can engage 2 then more engine braking can result. In Tassie I was getting right down the gears and relying on the engine braking to conserve the brakes when towing he trailer. Even now, home on the flat lands, I still pull the shifter back to 4 and then 3 as I approach the traffic lights. Saves brake pads - I got 160k out of the front set.

I've never had the car auto downshift by itself when cruising downhill. The throttle is the input for downshifting when cruise is on and you don't necessarily increase throttle down hill.

I assume your in D and not S mode (also assume the 6 speed is the same as the old 5 speed with respect to this). If so then it should be working and as Symo says it also does it automatically with cruise control on once you are about 10km/hr over your pre-set speed without you touching the brake.

Suggest you check the owners manual to see if it works the same way as the old 5 speed trani does.

I am a recent owner of the 2.8 auto. On test drives it seemed to drop gears to some degree to hold the cruise speed but not as strong as Ford seem to be .
