  • 6 Speed Auto issues

    Hi,

Is anyone struggling with the new 6spd auto gearbox in the Prado? I seem to be having issues with the 6th gear. Sometimes even though the engine is revving around the 2000rpm mark the gearbox will not shift into 6th. This happens on flat road and down hills as well. If I back off on the throttle and then re apply 9 times out of 10 it will go into 6th. I have spoken with Toyota and let them know but they haven't gotten back to me yet with any information.

    Its becoming very annoying.

    Thanks
    Doug

6th is VERY tall and so yes we all have trouble keeping it in 'top gear' even on flat roads at legal speeds.

If you activate cruise control you should find that it will slip straight in, though at the next hill you'll be back to 5th before you know it.

Using cruise will allow the box to shift into 6th far easier that modulating the throttle to get the gear...
    Cheers
    Micheal.

My understanding is that it won't use 6th unless you are doing at least 100km/hr as it is considered an overdrive gear.

Need to verify that actually as I'm unsure if its in 6th or 5th at 70km/h but thats were it has a mind of its own when comes to what gear it wants to be in.

Really gave me the shits especially when towing for not going into 6th as it is temp controled and wont use it if oil is too hot. But since i have put in Tins trans cooler kit its like a hole new car can even tow in 6th now.
Im sure mine goes in under 100 and I never had the trouble your talking of when empty driving but it does change between 5th and 6th alot if hilly.

What is your trans temp at when its playing up??

Its got a cooler and its only running at 60 odd degrees. Yep 6th is basically non existent when towing 2t.

            What weight are you towing?

Well that's answered my question, I thought there was an issue with mine, it jumps in and out of 6th also.. Makes sense as at 100 in 6th gear it is only doing 1500 rpm or so. Mine is luckily not very noticeable by ear or feel, but can tell by the tacho moving mostly.

Its something I have asked my local dealer as well because my point was that it constantly changing is heating the oil and gives you worse fuel economy. I said it needs to stay in t/c lock up and use the torque of the engine. But same response as normal "sorry thats the way they are and we can't change anything "

Is there a way we can manually lock the torque converter?

Dont believe so as yet any way.
I have heard if you get a ecm tune on engine that the trans can be done aswell to hold gears longer and the lock up in. But don't no anyone that has it done to confirm and im a bit reluctant to do it to keep my warranty

Are you crazy? Attempting to tow in 5th is bad enough let alone trying in 6th!! No wonder you're having to put down full throttle.

Suggest you have a good read of your manual - you'll end up with a Zero Speed auto if you destroy it.
                        Cheers

Yeah i read it but whats the point of a 6 speed trans if you can only use 4 and at 110kph the car is doing over 3000 rpm

5th (0.687) & 6th (0.580) are overdrive gears only, 4th is 'top' gear with a 1.00 ratio. - They're there as crusing gears and to lower fuel consumption.

It's always been advisable to toe in 4th since the dawn of time. That's why 90kmh is a better speed for ultra heavy loads of 2.5T and more.
