  • 2019 Prado Transmission Cooler Lines

    Hi,

I'm about to install a trans cooler in my 2019 prado. On the radiator, is the top or bottom connection the fluid return to the gearbox? I want to make sure I get the connections the right way around so the external cooler is plumbed after the radiator cooler.

On my 1KD 120 prado, the top hose was the return, just want to confirm the arrangement on the new model.

    Thanks,

I have a 1GD Prado with the 6-speed auto too. I also tow and plan to install an ATF cooler.

I don't know the answer to your question but the way I'd work it out would be to start the engine from cold and feel which pipe to/from the transmission gets hot first. (Lucky we have two hands hey?)

I found the diagram. The outlet from the radiator cooler is the top connection on the radiator.

Kaon have a video for a transmission cooler installation for a 150 but the motor is not the same as my 1GD motor.

Yeah I watched that however the instructions that came with the kit suggest connecting to the bottom radiator connection hence my confusion.

Someone people believe putting the transmission cooler in line before the engine radiator is better, maybe that is why your instructions are written as connecting to the bottom radiator connection.

The fluid level check temperature is 35-45 degrees on the AC60 transmission.

The 5 speed in the previous model was checked at 45-55 degrees.

Just bought my Kaon kit (2016 1GD) and I'm confused.
The Craig Davies instructions say cooler after radiator.
The Kaon instructions say connect at the bottom.
The Kaon youtube video says connect at the top.
Conflicting reports on various forums whether top or bottom is the return.....
Also conflicting reports on cooler with barbs pointing up or down....
Any real world evidence on whether top or bottom is the return line, and best method to install?
                Cheers

I have placed mine after the radiator and monitor temps using OBD2 scanner. I do alot of beach driving and have noticed a significant reduction of temps compared to no aftermarket oil cooler, not just cooler though but extremely stable. It has very minimal temp spikes.
The temp is measured at the pan though and not the torque converter. I do have a readout for both but the converter only rises a few degrees conpared to the pan.
                  Hope this helps.

Hi Mike, Yeah I saw nasty temps when towing on the highway.
Tin from Kaon emailed me back and advised either way works.
Said that the bottom end of the radiator is the return line but cooling effect is still fine if connected the top (radiator inlet)
Is yours inline at the top or bottom of the radiator? Install certainly looks easier at the top.

Im actually using a B&M cooler and made the mounting brackets myself. I rubber isolated mine like the oem radiator mounts to help with bumps and vibrations. My trans cooler is positioned after the factory radiator/cooler which i think from memory is the top hose just below the top radiator hose.
