  • Transmission "unlearning"

Have a brand new engine and turbo in my 150 Prado after old one was destroyed by garage not doing up the oil filter.

It's done 7,000 klm on new donk but the question is about my transmission. Funny things going on during first few miles. It took 1000 klm for the cruise control to figure itself out and work properly (I didn't use it to run in but tried it during that time). Now it's settled down and as good as original.

But the auto trans is not. Most of the time manual shift of the auto works well. But it seems when you need it most is when it misbehaves. Coming down a steep grade, knock it into "S" and it immediately drops into 4th as it should. Pull it back to 3rd and it will often go into neutral (LCD display says "3") you can feel the car accelerating away, opposite of what you want and it can take up to 4 seconds for it to engage third.

Going into 2nd, similar story. Sometimes it will even go in initially just for a second, drop into neutral and then engage properly in anything up to 4 secs.

All gear selections mentioned above are done well below maximum speeds for down shifts so that's not the issue.

When mentioned to the mechanics they suggested as the transmission has "electronic learning", it may take time to settle down as everything was disconnected for the engine swap.

I reckon 7,000 klm is plenty.

Is this something that can be adjusted, say by Toyota themselves or by an Auto specialist?

Ask the dealer to reset the transmission computer. They may not have done this when they installed the new engine.

Did the new engine include all new sensors such at air flow sensor or was just a short motor and turbo installed and all other bits transferred over?

Note that the 2.8 litre 1GD has a single ECU that manages both the engine and gearbox.

The ECU may not like dropping back to 3rd if the vehicle speed is too high.

I had my 2016 GX red-lined in third gear (lever set to S4, no throttle), when descending a steep hill with cruise control engaged while towing a 2T (loaded) trailer yesterday. No choice but to use the brakes.

Thanks gents. All down changes were done below gearbox speed limits. So nothing to do with overspeed.

Thanks for the tip GXL, Good to know that may be a "thing". I'll ask about a reset for the transmission computer. The motor had a few things on it like pump and injectors but I got the impression that other than that, new turbo put on and all else transferred over. So air flow etc was probably from the old donk.

PS That's one steep grade GeeWhizz. My van is 2.7t fully loaded. Haven't towed it with the new engine yet but it's when that's on and I'm coming down the Oxley that I'd kinda like the gearbox to work properly. Always have brakes but........

That gearbox problem doesn’t sound like a learning issue especially as you are using manual mode. I would ask them to look for the issue.
