Will the alternator charge my second battery with a dual battery set-up???

I see Piranha offroad are selling their own version of this Voltage boosting idea. They call theirs "ALTERNATOR OUTPUT COMPENSATOR" (AOC). see link: Alternator Output Compensator

I have seen a Youtube of his demonstration to the dangers of buying the internet versions of the Diode/Fuse replacement.... Good demo, but would like to hear comments from LeighW, & others as to their thoughts on the subject ?

Their price is $98 per device.....u got to be kiddin....

All my units are designed to fuse at or below the value of the existing fuse, the M3K for
instance will trip at 850ma.

I would like to see the demo you talk about can you please post the link?

instance will trip at 850ma, the MK3 uses an electronic self resetting circuit breaker for circuit protection, it will simply reset once fault is removed.

I would like to see the demo you talk about can you please post the link?

please excuse my ignorance, i'm a complete dunce when it comes to all things 12 volt.

so basically, the Dc-Dc chargers are not required for a dual battery setup in a 150 d4d. You simply need a booster diode and the traditional dual battery wiring setup?

Yes that is correct, a booster diode and simple VSR will provide much better performance:





Test environment:

Toyota 120 Prado D4D

Cranking battery Optima D27F (fully charged)

Aux Marine Pro 600 about 50% SOC (12.04V)

Rotronics isolator in simple VSR mode

Alternator output voltage about 14.3V – 14.1V

Ambient temperature 25C

Monitoring equipment, wireless amp & volt meters.

Sample Rate Amps & Volts = 2 Seconds interval, range auto.

A couple of points to note, I’m not using 6B&S as I used cable supplied as a kit which is a smaller gauge, also I have fuseable links fitted to my batteries and these introduce some added voltage drop of around .15V under high current loads.

Peak current 61.6A

Average recharge current first hour 28.1A

Average recharge current for last 40 minutes 14.68A

Test terminated at 1 hour 40 minutes as I arrived homeJ

Results:

Total charge put back in in 1 hour 40 minutes in the first hour 42.78A (85.5%)

A 20A DCDC charger would have replaced 33.33A in the same time. (66.66%)

The total recharge time would be about the same as a 20A charger, however the simple VSR will replace the bulk of the charge much more quicker, the more deeply discharged the battery is, or the more battery capacity you have the more the balance swings in favor of simple the VSR Setup.

Also keep in mind a 20A charger can only do one battery, connecting a second would double the recharge time, with the basic isolator and assuming the alternator has enough reserve capacity the recharge time would still be the same for one, two or even three batteries, if a separate cable is run from the isolator to each battery.

To improve on the first hour recharge I you would need a 40A charger, with heavier cable I would most likely matched or bettered the 40A charger in the first hour, the same also applies to the 40A charger, connect two batteries two it and you double your recharge times.

Been warning of the dangers of using normal diodes for years, not one of my units tested,
never seen that specific type he tested before, looks like a general purpose blocking diode,
like the way he carries on about nothing like it on the market and their the first to come up with it!

There's a couple of points to note and I don't like their deceptive advertising, one
if you look at the device which is implied to be sold here, it appears to be polarised, ie has
slots in the side to ensure it is inserted the correct way, one look will tell any competent
person it is not a fuse, second I doubt the unit would actually even fit in a mini blade fuse
position. You maybe be able to plug it into a microblade spot though.

Even if someone is selling a unit with a similar packaging it doesn't mean the version their
selling isn't a fused type. I notice they did not test any units currently available here on Ebay
no doubt to avoid legal action, just mentioned internet and if it has been imported from the
source I think it has it would have been purchased as a general purpose diode and not a
booster diode, a check with the manufactures website would have indicated to be used in
conjunction with a fuse.

Don't like the advertising, it is deceptive, alarmist and an aggressive selling push.

I have passed the info onto someone who may be interested and I would suspect
the video may be pulled shortly.
