  • Duel Battery Selection Question

Just got my duel battery system fitted to my 150 Series GX, with a redarc BCDC1220 3 stage battery charger & 2 12V points in the rear with duel reading volt meter.

It was to be fitted with a Optima D34 battery but when I picked it up it had a Century NS70X.
Thay said sorry that they will fit the D34 if I still wanted but had none there at the moment.
Then went on to say that I am probable better off with the NS70X.

All my research pointed to the D34, with being cranking & deep cycle & quicker recharging, especially with the BCDC.
I thought the NS70X was just a cranking battery & not as good for repeated recharging when it repeatedly runs low.

My use is for 1 & 2 night max overnight stays camping & will be running a 40lt engel & some LED lighting.
Some times we don't drive after arriving till going home.
Use a camper trailer for longer trips with 100ah bat setup, & I will be doing a fair bit on corrigated roads.

Looking for advice & suggestions on my battery choice.
(Not a auto sparky or any sought of sparky by far)

PS.... all monies difference is soughted.

NS70X is a cranking battery not deep cycle, I'd get it replaced with a deep cycle.

You probably already paid a lot more for the Optima so why settle for the cheaper Century.

        Cheers, Jim

D34 much better option, will kill the N70 too quickly!

So if I have a standard Toyota cranking battery, I am using a Radark isolator and I want a second battery for the fridge and some LED lights, what is the recommended option?
I was going to get an AGM after reading about them, but other threads say to not use them

Given you have a D4D, I would use one of Leigh's Voltage boosters and one of these http://supercharge.com.au/product_detail.php?seq=104

                Thanks Guys, helped a lot.
Going to still go with my original choice "D34".

Already got BCDC fitted, and the rest wired, hadn't run across the 'Amp-Tec D50Z' before
& Steve, if I read every thread on everything, I wouldn't end up buying anything.

& we can't do that now, can we !!

I use the D50Z with the alternator diode mod, I'm using it at the moment to run my fridge while camping. Great combo and importantly the D50Z fits with minimal mods and can be used for backup cranking.

Steve, I got an AGM 100 Amp Hour for $<300 from wholesaler, 780CCA and 2 year warranty, Chinese version, never heard of brand. Used for 7 days over Christmas running 50lt Waeco, was driving daily, recharged v quickly, battery never dropped under 12.65, brothers SC All rounder 80 amp hour ran down to 11.6 at one stage, admitedely he drove much less than me.

Not trying to sell AGM's, jury still out for me but at such a cheap price, thought it was a worthwhile risk if it works well and can do some research for forum at the same time (-:

They are great if you are using a unit that boost the charge rate, eg. Ctek 250 Dual or the Redarc BCDC 1220. If you are just going with an isolator, eg. SBI12, etc., go with the more expensive deep cycle batteries like the Optima D34.
Just my opinion for what it is worth.

Hence the diode mod, no problems charging even over short runs. I use an AGM in the camper, but from what I understand they don't like the heat in the engine bay and they are definitely not designed to be a backup cranking battery.

I know everyone talks about the mod that increases the alternator output by 0.5v, however I haven't been able to find any instructions on how to preform this mod. Can anyone point me to a post on the mod?

Is the diode, resistor, whatever mod to increase output really necessary?

I've run an sbi12 for 3 weeks and 10,000 km now, running my fridge, freezer, radios and work lights etc off it, and it's charging fine?

I'm running a d34 but I don't understand why if the alternator is able to charge the starting battery, and the aux battery only steals charge from the starting then why it would be necessary.

Its more a nice too have, just helps speed up the charging. LeighW has written a few posts on this explaining the good and bad on this.
