Check out my link in the post above, ive got pictures of the Ballasts installed behind the ARB bar and not taking any room from the engine bay.

As you can see here, the metal of the engine bay limits installation with the ballast attached, so I fitted the bulbs first, then mounted and secured the ballast on the back. It's a nice tight fit, so takes up very little room. I've got big hands, and it was a bit fiddly, but if you've got hands like a small female Chinese doctor, you'll be right... ;-) can I say that?

They're an all in one unit. ie the ballast is attached the the rear of the bulbs plug and the wiring plugs straight into the wiring harness. For about $30 more i figured the ease of installation should be worth it (hopefully!?). Will see how they go and post up here.

Anyone used them / similar before?
Let us know.... Will be interesting with 55w as low beam. Seems a bit high?

I just purchased 55w high beam only. I have left the lows as original to avoid he wrath of the law (and not to p!$$ off other drivers). The lows are bright enough as they are. The high beams are BRIGHT now though! Love them!

They've got the usual bright start up, then 5-10 seconds as they warm up to achieve full brightness.

Have you guys noticed that retrofitted HIDs seem to dazzle no matter how they're adjusted ? It makes me wonder if the reflector for OEM HIDs is different than for halogens ?
              Cheers Ross

                Hey Ross,

                Yep, they're very different.

A few guys over at at the 4WD Action forums are having a bit of a rant on the subject. Only made it through the first few pages but they seem to agree with your observation

Also, the globes I put in are about 7cm long. Perhaps not being a 'point source of light', the aftermarket ones throw a bit more light into undesired areas.

Another good reason to only do the high beams.

agree cbm, an update on that kit.
was very easy in the end, no cutting any wires, just plug in existing high beam loom to new loom and whammo, she works!!! and wow, extremely bright, no need for spotties IMO, very impressed!

Does anyone know what the colour temperature of the factory HIDs in the low beam of VX/Kakadu models is? I'm wanting to upgrade my high beams and am not sure if it's necdessary to match the colour temperature with the existing low beams. Can't decide between 4300K, 5000K or 6000K. I want them to be bright/white rather than yellowish, but have heard that the higher the colour temperature the poorer the brightness/penetration (for the same Watts), and that the higher colour temps are more quickly dissipated on wet roads. Is that your experience?

                      Thanks,

                      David.

The factory HID is closer to 4300K. I've used 5000K in my Hi-Beam upgrade and Spotties and I'm very happy with that colour temp, it is the closest colour to real white without being blue. I have used 6000K in another vehicle and I'd never go that way again as it's totally useless in the wet. It only looks good to to other people who see your car ie. it looks bling!

Stick with 5000K and you'll be happy.

Thanks VXWesty. 5000K sounds like a good compromise and sound advice.

On a slightly different note, what are people's opinions/experiences with reflector damage from UV radiation? Does a HID bulb radiate more UV than a halogen of the same wattage? I am looking at upgrading my high beams (already have the factory HID low beams) to the HID Lights Down Under 70W Gen3 9005 kit at http://www.hid-lightsdownunder.com/service1.html. 70W is 10W higher than the existing halogen high beams. The website warns of reflector discolouring from UV with high wattage bulbs (i.e. 55W compared to 35W for low beams) when "driving every night", but as 70W is the only kit they sell for the high beams presumably they are suggesting high beams are not a worry since they are not run as often, or maybe they know the high beam reflectors are more durable? Not sure if I should take the risk though? Otherwise, this seller seems reputable, bulbs are actually rated/test to a luminous intensity (rather than just a wattage) and plenty of good info on the website. What do other users think?

                          David.

I've had the hid high/low beam fitted to my Grande and they were so bright on low beam that its something im not even thinking about on the Kakadu. I've just installed the 100w hid kit in my 4000's spotties and colour temp @ 5000k its beautiful.
